Imtiaz Ali's 2020 film, Love Aaj Kal, featuring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, garnered a tepid reception upon its release in theaters. This film served as a sequel to his 2009 production of the same title, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in leading roles. Despite the success of the original, Love Aaj Kal (2020) did not replicate that achievement. In a recent episode of Game Changers, Imtiaz acknowledged that the film featuring Sara and Kartik lacked originality and discussed its shortcomings.

Imtiaz Ali on the shortcomings of Love Aaj Kal (2020)

During his appearance on Game Changers, Imtiaz Ali reflected on the box office failure of Love Aaj Kal. He candidly recognized that he made several errors in the film's execution. "There were 2-3 aspects I could have approached differently. I attempted to incorporate too many elements, which resulted in a cumbersome narrative. The film's simplicity was sacrificed, leading to confusion among viewers. It felt as though it lacked genuine emotion. Additionally, I believe the film did not possess the necessary freshness," Imtiaz stated.

When questioned about whether the film's lack of success was attributable to its cast, the director refuted this notion. He emphasized the importance of having a valid rationale for producing a sequel. Although Imtiaz possessed a reason, he acknowledged his failure to convey it effectively. "At the very least, it was not communicated in the film's promotional efforts," he remarked.

The director also confessed that the disappointment of Love Aaj Kal in 2020 has made him reluctant to pursue sequels. He noted that despite the film presenting a fresh narrative, it did not resonate with audiences. "Unless there is a compelling need, I am not inclined to create sequels. However, one should never say never—Rockstar 2 could be an exciting prospect," Imtiaz concluded.
