Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali received acclaim for his 2024 film, Amar Singh Chamkila. However, his previous theatrical release, Love Aaj Kal 2, did not perform well at the box office. In a recent interview with Komal Nahata on his YouTube channel, Game Changers, the director discussed the film's disappointing reception.

Imtiaz Ali says Love Aaj Kal 2 lacked freshness

In reflecting on the box office failure of Love Aaj Kal 2, Imtiaz stated, “There were 2-3 aspects I could have approached differently. I attempted to incorporate too many elements, which resulted in a cumbersome narrative. The film's simplicity was sacrificed, leading to confusion among viewers. It felt as though it lacked genuine emotion. Additionally, I believe the film did not possess the necessary freshness.”

He also mentioned that the film's lack of success has made him hesitant about pursuing sequels in the future. He explained, “It’s not solely about the casting; when creating a sequel, there should be a compelling reason behind it. I had a rationale, but I failed to convey it effectively, particularly in the film's marketing. Although I had a new storyline for Love Aaj Kal 2, it ultimately did not resonate with audiences. Therefore, unless there is a compelling need, I am not inclined to create sequels. However, I remain open to the idea—Rockstar 2 could be an interesting project.”

About Love Aaj Kal 2

This romantic comedy-drama featured Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan in the leading roles, with Randeep Hooda and Arushi Sharma in significant supporting roles. It served as a sequel to the successful 2009 film Love Aaj Kal, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Unfortunately, the sequel failed to captivate audiences, with many critics pointing out shortcomings in the performances. Released in 2020, it garnered only ₹56.9 crore globally and was deemed a box-office failure.

While Imtiaz has not formally announced his next project, he indicated during the interview that he has multiple scripts prepared and is awaiting the opportune moment to develop them.
