Hunter Schafer Responds to X-Men Fan Casting: Open to Playing Mystique

There have been whispers for a while now about some Hollywood stars possibly stepping into new roles in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot. Fans have played a part in getting some of these celebrities interested in superhero origin stories. Recently, names like Elliot Page from The Umbrella Academy and Hunter Schafer from Euphoria have come up, with speculation suggesting they might be in the running for super-powered roles. Some reports even claim that Page has had discussions with Marvel about a potential project.

A user on X/Twitter, known as MyTimeToShineH, who often shares Marvel and DC rumors (though not always accurately), has added fuel to the fire regarding Elliot's possible return to a superhero narrative and mentioned that Hunter is "being considered" for the iconic shapeshifter Mystique.

This same rumor mill has also suggested that Sadie Sink could be a top choice for the new Jean Grey, while Jack Champion and Harris Dickinson are being looked at for Cyclops. Denzel Washington's name has also popped up as a potential Magneto, with Ayo Edebiri rumored to be in the running for Storm.

Hunter Schafer is back on her Euphoria journey

Euphoria Season 3 is finally back in production after a long break, and Hunter Schafer is set to return as Jules Vaughn, her breakout character.

Talking about her return to the HBO set, Schafer shared with Entertainment Tonight at the Independent Spirit Awards that Euphoria holds a special place in her heart since it’s where she “learned to act and write” and was her gateway into the film industry. She also hinted at the excitement of this ‘little homecoming’ and responded to fans who are hoping to see her as Mystique in the upcoming X-Men reboot.

Hunter Schafer is all set to take on the role of Mystique in the upcoming X-Men reboot

Hunter confirmed she was in the loop about all the excitement, saying, "Yeah, my dad texted me about that."

She opened the door for her fans, expressing her enthusiasm for the idea of being cast in an X-Men project. "That would be awesome," she added. "These fan casts pop up every now and then. It's always really nice and… usually for characters I genuinely love."

When it comes to the most well-known live-action portrayals of X-Men's Mystique/Raven, Rebecca Romijn played her in the first three X-Men movies, while Jennifer Lawrence took on the role starting with X-Men: First Class in 2011.

X-Men showcasing real-life issues

Mystique has always been seen as a character that blurs the lines of sexuality and gender norms. Marvel’s narratives have often been described as a “reflection of the world right outside of our window,” a sentiment echoed by Stan Lee back in 2017.

Recently, some fans have pushed back against superhero stories that lean heavily into diversity or political themes, labeling them as “woke” in a pretty negative light. Lee summed it up nicely when he said, “The stories of heroism… have room for everyone, regardless of their race, gender, religion or colour of their skin. The only things we don't have room for are hatred, intolerance and bigotry."

Mystique’s ability to change her appearance has sparked a lot of discussions about gender fluidity (she was originally meant to be Nightcrawler’s dad). While fans debate her gender fluidity, it’s established that she is canonically bisexual.

A trans actress had her passport gender updated

Schafer is currently facing a personal challenge amid the ongoing debates about "woke" issues among fans. The star of the HBO teen drama, who is a transgender woman, recently criticized the Trump administration after her new passport listed her gender as male instead of female.

Her passport now has an 'M' on it, a direct result of Trump’s executive order from January 20, which mandates that the government recognizes only a person's biological sex at birth.

“I honestly don’t care that they put an M on my passport. It doesn’t change who I am or my identity as a trans person. But it does make things a bit tougher,” she expressed passionately. “I just want to emphasize that trans people are beautiful. We’re not going anywhere. I’m always going to be trans. A letter on a passport doesn’t define me. I don’t have all the answers on how to tackle this, but I felt it was crucial to highlight that this is a real issue.”
