Actor Hugh Grant recently revealed that he had a rather "intrusive, insulting, and creepy" encounter at Heathrow Airport in London. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the experience, mentioning that he was traveling with his wife, Anna Elisabet Eberstein, and their kids. During the trip, an immigration officer questioned his children, asking if Hugh and Anna were their "mum and dad'.
Hugh Grant recounts an awkward moment at a London airport
Hugh shared his thoughts on the incident, saying, "I just passed through Heathrow with my wife and kids. We all share the last name Grant on our passports. The immigration officer started chatting with my kids and then leaned in to ask them, ‘Are these your Mum and Dad?’ It felt intrusive, disrespectful, and a bit creepy."
He didn't mention his travel destination. Hugh was accompanied by his three kids, who are 12, nine, and seven years old. He also has two other children, a 13-year-old and another 12-year-old, from his previous relationship with Tinglan Hong.
How the internet responded
In response to the post, someone commented, "Given the alarming rates of child trafficking, I believe it's completely reasonable and essential to have discussions with kids at airports." Another comment said, "Can you believe someone didn’t recognize Hugh Grant? That’s unfortunate for you."
One tweet stated, "I’m sure child smuggling is a real issue, which is why the question is important. It’s definitely a positive thing if a discreet, well-intentioned inquiry at an airport can help protect children." A fan tweeted, "What’s worse: that awkward whisper or the fact that the officer didn’t seem to know who you were?" Another user added, "This is all about child safety. You should appreciate that the officer was just doing their job."
