Ryan Condal addresses George RR Martin's criticism

In response to George's blog post, Ryan acknowledged that he had not personally read it but had received information about its content. He expressed his disappointment, stating, "I have been a devoted fan of A Song of Ice and Fire for nearly 25 years, and working on the show has been one of the greatest privileges of my career as a writer and my life as a fan of science fiction and fantasy. George is not only a literary giant and an icon but also a personal hero of mine, and he has significantly influenced my development as a writer."

He further elaborated, "The narrative we are dealing with is incomplete, necessitating considerable effort to connect the dots and a great deal of creativity throughout the process. I want to emphasize that I made every possible effort to involve George in the adaptation process. I truly did, over many years. We had a productive and strong collaboration for an extended period. However, as we progressed further, he became increasingly reluctant to address the practical challenges we faced in a reasonable manner."

What George RR Martin Said

Martin voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the alterations made to House of the Dragon, specifically the exclusion of Maelor Targaryen. He believed this decision diminished the impact of the Blood and Cheese sequence, as it eliminated Helaena’s poignant moment—where she offers her life to save her son. Initially, George RR  Martin was amenable to the change, thinking that Maelor's introduction would simply be delayed until season 3, but he later realized that the character had been completely omitted. While he recognized practical considerations such as budget limitations and the challenges of casting child actors, he contended that these modifications undermined the narrative's coherence and emotional depth.

Additionally, he suggested that more substantial changes might occur in upcoming seasons, remarking, "And there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come if House of the Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4..."
