Hollywood’s Ted Raimi Praises Indian Cinema, Warns: ‘Don’t Try to Copy Bollywood’

Hollywood actor Ted Raimi expresses a strong admiration for Ajay Devgn’s Singham franchise and Indian cinema in general, especially for its action-oriented films that skillfully combine music, dance, and a rich array of emotions. Ted believes that India has perfected the craft of creating action movies that many filmmakers around the world have struggled to achieve.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Ted, whose recent film Failure was showcased at the second edition of the Red Lorry Film Festival—an event organized by BookMyShow—opens up about his passion for Indian cinema and other related topics.

On his love for Indian films

Although Ted has never set foot in India, his interest in Indian cinema has only intensified, prompting him to explore the dynamic realm of Bollywood films more thoroughly.

"I have yet to visit India, but it has always been a dream of mine. I eagerly anticipate the few Indian films that reach America and watch them frequently. I particularly enjoy the action genre. Without a doubt, you produce some of the finest action movies ever," Ted expresses.

When inquired about his favorite Bollywood director, Ted acknowledges that he has one in mind but struggles to remember the name.

"I don't want to mispronounce it to the point where you can't understand. I watched it a few years back, and it’s likely my favorite Indian action film," he reveals, adding, "I should have noted it down."

He continues by describing the film he saw in theaters, stating, "It revolves around a super cop who relentlessly pursues criminals. He is a devoted family man and has a romantic interest."

When asked if the film in question was the Ajay Devgn-led Singham that piqued his interest, Ted's expression brightened with enthusiasm as he confirmed, "I absolutely love Singham and its sequel."

On action films in India

When discussing action films in India, Ted expresses his admiration, stating, “I have a great appreciation for Indian cinema. The films are exceptional. Indian action movies uniquely blend music, dance, comedy, and action, creating a style that is truly one-of-a-kind globally. No one else can replicate it like you do.”

He further remarks, “Attempts to imitate this style often fall short and fail miserably. Your film industry and cultural heritage excel at producing these films better than anyone else.” Ted is recognized for his roles in notable projects such as The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, the Spider-Man trilogy, Candyman, and Supernatural.

On his career in Hollywood

He was last seen in the film "Failure," which was filmed in a continuous 87-minute shot. The narrative centers on business magnate James (Ted), who grapples with an impending bank debt deadline and faces a harrowing choice between financial ruin and committing murder.

“This has been the most demanding film project I have undertaken to date. The entire film was captured in a single, uninterrupted take, which required me to draw heavily on my theatrical experience here in America,” he explains.

The 59-year-old actor expresses concern that younger performers are neglecting the theater, which he believes adversely affects their craft.

“Actors like me are becoming increasingly rare. Fewer individuals are beginning their careers in theater, and that is unfortunate. Studying theater teaches one how to engage with an audience in real-time. This is an opportunity that contemporary actors are missing out on. While there are still many talented actors today, I feel they are depriving themselves of a vital aspect of the profession that could greatly enhance their skills,” he concludes.
