Hilaria Baldwin is addressing the buzz about her accent. In a recent episode of her TLC reality show, The Baldwins, the 41-year-old explained that her switch between Spanish and American accents is a form of "code-switching." Since rising to fame after marrying Alec Baldwin in 2012, the yoga instructor has dealt with backlash regarding her Spanish roots.
Hilaria Baldwin speaks out about the debate over her Spanish accent
In a podcast from 2020, Hilaria mentioned that she was born in Mallorca and grew up in Boston, stating she moved to the U.S. when she was 19. However, social media investigators revealed that she was actually born and raised in the U.S., as reported by Fox News. She later took to Instagram to apologize for the “confusion,” explaining that aspects like “culture, languages, sexual orientations, religions [and] political beliefs” can be “fluid.”
During a recent episode of her TLC show, Hilaria reflected on the ongoing criticism regarding her accent, saying, “Being in the spotlight, as people like to call it. People say, 'Oh, don’t you get used to it?' No, you don’t get used to it.” She added, “You never get used to people being mean. But you take a deep breath, and I think you learn to distance yourself from it, so you just try to turn down the volume in your head a bit… and I’m not going to take it personally.”
Hilaria also shared that she picked up the habit of “code-switching” after facing negativity due to her mixed background. “Growing up with multiple cultural influences means you’ll never fully fit in. You can try,” she explained. “You can chameleon. People who code-switch are really good at blending in… and you don’t even think about it. It just feels normal. It’s natural.”
She compared it to communicating with an elderly person who has hearing difficulties, saying, “I’m going to emphasize, I’m going to speak slower,” adding, “And you’re not even really thinking about it. You just start to do it.” She concluded, “You know what it’s called? Code-switching… I had to learn about it because the whole world was mean to me, and so I had to learn it. It’s code-switching.”
