Harshavardhan Rameshwar: Why Composing for Psychological Dramas Demands More Than Hero Films

Composer Harshavardhan Rameshwar, recognized for his contributions to Animal and Arjun Reddy, is poised to make his debut in Malayalam cinema with the forthcoming psychological thriller Anomie, featuring Bhavana and Rahman in key roles.

"The entire film was already shot when the team approached me, which made it easier for me to compose the score, as I had the complete film and visuals available to me before I began my work. Sujith Sarang, the cinematographer, delivered visually captivating work, and it was a unique experience to create music and songs for a film that had already been filmed, in contrast to the usual process where we score first and then shoot," Harshavardhan shared with OTTplay.

Harshavardhan Rameshwar on scoring for Anomie, making Malayalam debut

Having previously worked in Hindi and Telugu cinema, Harshvardhan describes his experience on Anomie, his debut in Malayalam films, as both new and invigorating. "It was a challenge to develop the film's soundscape. Director Riyas Marath was eager to experiment and sought an international sound that blended hip-hop and EDM. He aimed for a hybrid approach. Simultaneously, the acting felt very authentic and genuine, as if the camera was capturing real moments. We explored various genres, including hip-hop and Futurepop," the composer explains.

Anomie will join the ranks of notable psychological thrillers in Malayalam cinema, such as Anjaam Pathiraa, Thalavan, and Bougainvillea.

Harshvardhan notes that, in contrast to Animal, which included a blend of classic tracks and collaborations with various artists, Anomie did not follow a similar scoring approach. "We approached each song and score with a new perspective, and since it is a psychological thriller, we needed to enhance every scene with the music. Currently, there are three songs, and we may include an additional one."

‘It is a pressure for composers to score for the reel culture’

A prevalent challenge encountered by contemporary composers is the necessity to incorporate a memorable hook or an engaging 15-second segment in their songs to enhance the likelihood of going viral on social media platforms that rely on short video clips. Harshvardhan recognizes this pressure, stating, “Composers face the challenge of adapting to reel culture, as it is essential for that 15 seconds to deeply connect with the social media landscape. In the past, this was not an issue, as music was primarily created with live instruments and recordings. Today, we must focus on crafting sounds that appeal to social media, which often leads to a more electronic approach.”

Does Anomie music adhere to this trend? The composer clarifies that neither he nor the director focused on catchy hook lines. "Our goal was to create a quality song rather than chase after hooks. I believe this approach has led us to produce excellent music." This Malayalam film presents a unique challenge for Harshvardhan, who has previously composed background scores for prominent actors such as Ranbir Kapoor (Animal), Shahid Kapoor (Kabir Singh), and Vijay Devarakonda (Arjun Reddy). In Anomie, which is distinctly genre-oriented, the composer remarks, "Those earlier films relied heavily on the protagonists, and the narratives were character-driven. However, Anomie features a multitude of characters. While in Animal and Arjun Reddy, the focus was on elevating the hero, here, the emphasis is on the scenes and the characters involved. In Anomie, the story itself serves as the hero." Harshvardhan further notes that composing for a drama presents a greater challenge than scoring for films centered around heroism.

In addition to Anomie, Harshvardhan is engaged in two other projects: Spirit, featuring Prabhas and directed by Sandeep Vanga, and Prithviraj’s Nobody. He states, “I will prioritize the story and the score. Each of these films represents a distinct perspective, and having this diversity is beneficial. I am also eager for the release of Anomie.”

As the conversation concludes, Harshvardhan expresses his enthusiasm for unveiling his previously composed music. “I plan to release them gradually on my channel. I believe this is the right moment, as many composers are doing the same. There are several singles I have composed that I have been waiting to release under the right circumstances. Now, I intend to share them on my platform,” he concludes.
