A fresh wave of kids is getting ready to dive into the Harry Potter universe thanks to the upcoming web series from HBO. As reported by Variety, HBO made it official on Monday by revealing the cast for iconic roles such as Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Rubeus Hagrid, and more.

The official cast for the Harry Potter series has been revealed

The report reveals some cast members that fans had speculated about, along with a few unexpected choices. John Lithgow, known for his role in The Crown, will portray Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer, famous for Tumbleweeds, takes on the role of McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu, recognized from Gangs of London, will play Snape, and Nick Frost, known from Shaun of the Dead, is set to play Hagrid. Earlier, it was mentioned that these actors were in discussions for the series. Additionally, the surprise newcomers to the cast are Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Francesca Gardiner, the showrunner and executive producer, along with Mark Mylod, who has directed several episodes and also serves as an executive producer, shared their excitement: “We’re thrilled to reveal that John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse will portray Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell, and Filch. It’s fantastic to have such incredible talent joining us, and we can’t wait to see them breathe new life into these cherished characters.”

A look into the Harry Potter series

Here are the first confirmed cast members for the much-anticipated web series. HBO held an open casting call that attracted over 30,000 submissions for the lead roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Brontë Film and TV, along with Warner Bros. Television, are also involved in the project.

The studio has described the series as a ‘faithful adaptation’ of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series. According to the official description, “Each season will delve into every aspect of the wizarding world, bringing ‘Harry Potter’ and its amazing adventures to both new and longtime fans.”

Francesca is not only the writer but also the executive producer and showrunner for the series. Mark will take on the role of executive producer and will direct several episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts from Brontë Film and TV, along with David Heyman from Heyday Films, will also serve as executive producers.
