Following the announcement, notable figures such as Hansal Mehta and Ricky Kej expressed their reactions to the news.

Hansal Mehta discusses the exclusion of Laapataa Ladies from the Oscars 2025 competition.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta expressed his discontent with the Film Federation of India's consistently poor strike rate and movie selections over the years. Grammy Award-winning composer Ricky Kej refers to Laapataa Ladies as a 'Wrong Choice'.

Grammy Award-winning composer Ricky Kej recently expressed his thoughts on his X account regarding the film Laapataa Ladies. He stated, "#LaapataaLadies is a well-crafted and entertaining film (which I enjoyed); however, it was an inappropriate selection to represent India in the best #InternationalFeatureFilm category. As anticipated, it did not succeed. When will we come to the realization that, year after year, we are making poor choices in our film selections? There are numerous outstanding films produced, and we ought to be securing victories in the #InternationalFeatureFilm category annually."

He further lamented, "Regrettably, we exist within a 'Mainstream Bollywood' bubble, where we often fail to appreciate films that extend beyond our personal entertainment preferences. Instead, we should focus on identifying quality films created by filmmakers who remain steadfast in their artistic vision, regardless of budget or star power—just exceptional cinematic art. Below is the poster for #LaapataaLadies; I suspect that many members of the Academy dismissed the film merely based on its appearance," Ricky concluded.

The FFI has unanimously selected Laapataa Ladies as India's official submission for the Oscars, chosen from a pool of 29 films that included the Bollywood blockbuster Animal, the Malayalam National Award-winning Aattam, and the Cannes awardee All We Imagine As Light. Numerous fans expressed their desire on social media for Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light to receive recognition at the Oscars 2025. For those unfamiliar, the film has already secured nominations for the Golden Globes 2025 and the Critics Choice Awards 2025.
