Hansal Mehta Reflects on Omerta: 'Nobody Watched It' Despite Fan Praise

Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao form a notable director-actor duo, recognized for their critically acclaimed works such as Shahid and Aligarh. Nevertheless, not all of their films have achieved the same level of success or recognition. The director was quick to highlight that “nobody watched” their 2017 crime drama Omerta, despite a fan describing it as “career-defining.”

What Hansal said

On Wednesday evening, an X user shared a poster of Omerta, captioning it, “Hidden Gem Alert (bell emoji) Witness @RajkummarRao in a career-defining performance in @MehtaHansal's #Omerta (fire emoji) Streaming on @PrimeVideoIN @JioCinema & @Zee5India (tv emoji).” Hansal responded to the tweet, stating, “So career defining that nobody watched the film. So career defining that neither of us have made a film like this again. Career defining indeed.”

Another user on X concurred with Hansal Mehta, noting that Omerta did not receive a broad theatrical release, despite being one of Rajkummar's finest performances to date. “One of @RajkummarRao's best works till date. Loved the movie, but yes, I watched it on OTT; I couldn’t find a screen showing it in Sydney at the time of release,” they remarked. “I remember traveling 10-12 kilometers from my college to a small multiplex to see it, but when I arrived, they informed me that the show had been canceled due to a lack of audience,” lamented another user.

“Haha, I appreciate it when accomplished individuals exhibit self-deprecating humor regarding their art,” commented another user. “Yes, I understand that these films did not perform well at the box office, but I have seen Omerta and Shahid, and I truly admired the work you and @RajkummarRao produced. Best director-actor duo! (content emoji),” stated another user. “Indeed, I watched it all alone in a theater in Goa. My father and brother were compelled to see a Marvel Avengers movie because my brother was under 18,” recalled another user.

About Omerta

Omerta is inspired by the life of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British terrorist of Pakistani descent. He was responsible for orchestrating the assassination of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002. The film featured Rajkummar in the role of Omar. Nevertheless, it garnered a mere ₹4.49 crore in box office revenue.
