Halle Berry believes that the Academy Awards are "not truly intended" for Black women. In the Apple TV+ documentary Number One on the Call Sheet, the 58-year-old reflected on her experience as the first and only Black woman to receive the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002.

Halle Berry on being the first and only Black woman to win Best Actress: ‘Did it change anything?’

Among the 13 Black actresses nominated for the esteemed award, Berry was the sole recipient. Recently, Cynthia Erivo was nominated for Best Actress but ultimately lost to Mikey Cyrus from Anora, as reported by Hollywood Reporter.

Reflecting on her groundbreaking achievement, the star of Never Let Go expressed that it prompted her to question, “Did it matter?” She further pondered, “Did it truly make a difference for women of color? For my sisters? For our collective journey?”

Berry reminisced about her expectations for change in 2021, when both Andra Day was nominated for The United States vs Billie Holiday and Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

“A few years back, I was seated with Andra Day, and I was across the room from Viola Davis, both nominated for outstanding performances. I was completely convinced that this would be the year one of them would take home the award,” she recalled.

“For their unique and remarkable reasons, they both deserved it, and I was certain,” Berry continued, encouraging her fellow Black actresses to “stop coveting” the Oscars, as the Best Actress award that year went to Frances McDormand for Nomadland, marking her third Academy Award win.

The Moonfall actress emphasized, “The system is not truly designed for us, so we must cease desiring what is not meant for us,” adding, “Ultimately, it’s about ‘How do we impact the lives of others?’ and that is the essence of art.”
