HBO is nearing the completion of negotiations for two additional significant cast members for its eagerly awaited adaptation of the Harry Potter series. Oscar and Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer is in discussions to portray Professor Minerva McGonagall, while Paapa Essiedu is also in talks for a role. They will join John Lithgow, who has already been confirmed to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore, as previously reported by Deadline.

Why Paapa Essiedu for the role of Snape?

Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu is reportedly nearing the completion of a deal to assume the role of the iconic Professor Severus Snape. During a Max event in London last December, Gardiner indicated that the upcoming Harry Potter series will adhere to the original ages of the characters as depicted in the books.

Consequently, Snape will be represented as 31 years old, and the Dursleys will also be depicted at a younger age than in the previous film adaptations. This casting choice explains the selection of the 30-something Essiedu for the role of Snape, a character who transitions from antagonist to hero. In the original films, the character was portrayed by the late Alan Rickman. Severus Snape serves as the Potions Master at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, eventually ascending to the role of Headmaster.

This role will signify Essiedu's return to HBO, where he previously collaborated with the network on the BBC/HBO limited series I May Destroy You, which garnered him acclaim for his portrayal of Kwame alongside Michaela Coel, earning both Emmy and BAFTA TV nominations.

About the other cast members of the Harry Potter series

The anticipated Harry Potter television series, which will be produced at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, the same location as the original films, is expected to premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027. In a noteworthy turn of events, more than 32,000 young actors have submitted audition tapes for the legendary lead characters of Harry, Hermione, and Ron; however, the final casting choices have not yet been revealed.
