Singer Guru Randhawa, who has established a prominent position in the entertainment industry with his Punjabi music, has expressed robust support for the recent initiative by the Punjab government to mandate Punjabi as a required subject in schools throughout the state.

Guru Randhawa lauds Punjab government

On Wednesday night, Guru utilized X, previously known as Twitter, to voice his endorsement of the Punjab government's initiative to mandate Punjabi as a subject in schools. He articulated his perspective, emphasizing the significance of the language in his personal journey.

"The Punjabi language is essential for every student in Punjab, regardless of the educational board. It is our pride and our mother," he stated, further adding, "While we honour all languages, Punjabi embodies our culture and heritage. My entire identity is rooted in my language and the songs in Punjabi (folded hand emoji). Forever Proud Villager, Proud Punjabi, Proud Indian (folded hand emoji)."

Guru is recognized for his hit songs including Patola, High Rated Gabru, Suit Suit, Ishare Tere, Ban Jaa Tu Meri Rani, and Lagdi Lahore Di. In 2022, he launched Punjabiyan Di Dhee, Tera Saath Ho, and Designer in collaboration with Yo Yo Honey Singh, achieving over 21 million views on YouTube within the initial 24 hours. He is set to appear in the upcoming film Shaunki Sardar.

About the directive

On Wednesday, the government of Punjab announced a new regulation mandating that all schools within the state, regardless of their educational affiliation, must incorporate Punjabi as a primary and compulsory subject in their curriculum.

According to this directive, schools affiliated with the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), or the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) are all required to teach Punjabi. During a press conference, Punjab's education minister, Harjot Singh Bains, stated that the AAP-led government has issued a new notification that takes effect immediately, designating Punjabi as a core subject for Class 10 across all educational boards in the state.
