Guneet Monga on the Violence Debate: 'Kill' vs. 'Animal' - A Different Perspective on Portrayal

In recent years, Bollywood has released several notably violent films. A prime example is Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 2023 hit family crime drama, Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, alongside Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's Kill, which premiered last year and stars newcomer Lakshya. During an interview with Faye D'Souza, Guneet Monga, co-producer of Kill, discussed the distinctions between the violence depicted in her film and that in Animal.

Guneet on Animal

The film presents a remarkable theatrical experience that left me astounded. The action sequences and overall cinematography are exceptionally well-executed, complemented by an impressive musical score. This film adopts a distinctive approach to storytelling. However, I find myself in disagreement with the narrative choices, particularly regarding the portrayal of misogyny, which made it challenging to witness the continual objectification of women's bodies. Ultimately, it is a matter of personal preference in how one chooses to convey a story. "Animal" has achieved significant success, resonating well with audiences, and I must confess that I viewed it in theatres, where it indeed provided a captivating experience. Despite my aversion to its misogynistic elements, I appreciated the action sequences presented in "Animal," remarked Guneet.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series, "Animal" features a talented cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Shakti Kapoor, and Prem Chopra, among others. The film has grossed over ₹900 crore globally and more than ₹600 crore within India.

Guneet on Kill

Guneet acknowledged that "Kill" has been described as “India's most violent film,” as it prominently features violence. “There has been extensive discussion regarding our perception of violence, our treatment of it, and the portrayal of women in the film. I must commend our director, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, who was consistently supportive throughout the process. His films, including 'Apurva' (2023), demonstrate a thoughtful approach to how women are depicted and how bodies are represented. Our focus remains on the artistry involved. While action and killings are integral to the narrative, a particularly insightful review remarked that ‘Kill is a film that loves and hates its action in equal measure.’ We intended to explore the extreme violence genre, yet ultimately, those boundaries became indistinct. There is a line towards the conclusion that states, ‘Tu rakshak nahi rakshasa hai,’ which reflects the idea that ‘An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.’ Therefore, we did not glorify the violent scenes; there was no slow-motion depiction of blood, nor was there any celebration of violence,” Guneet elaborated.

"Kill," co-produced by Guneet's Sikhya Entertainment and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, also featured Raghav Juyal and Tanya Maniktala. The film was distributed in the United States by Lionsgate.
