Singer and actor Parmish Verma stands out as one of the most recognized figures in the Punjabi entertainment sector today. Through his music and films, he has garnered a substantial fan base and made a significant impact on pop culture. However, Parmish frequently encounters criticism for allegedly glorifying firearms and violence in his work, a common accusation directed at Punjabi artists. In a recent interview with HT, Parmish addresses these allegations.

Parmish Verma on Punjabi music promoting guns

In response to inquiries regarding the portrayal of Punjabi songs as promoters of violence or firearms, Parmish begins by referencing Punjabi love ballads. He cites examples such as "Asi Tere Sheher Nu" and "Peed Tere Jaan Di" by Gurdas Maan, emphasizing that these too are part of Punjabi music. He elaborates, stating, "Music from any culture reflects its emotional landscape. Even in expressions of love, Punjabi music tends to be extravagant, often exceeding boundaries. For instance, the lyrics 'Asi Tere Sheher Nu Salaam Kar Chale' suggest a willingness to depart from your city."

To explain the presence of guns and bullets within the Punjabi music genre, Parmish asserts, "Punjabi music delves deeply into the spectrum of emotions. Heartbreak leads to sacrifice, annoyance breeds anger, and when rage surfaces, it often manifests as a gun. It is about amplifying every emotion to its fullest extent."

Parmish Verma's gripe with critics

The singer-turned-actor expresses his frustration with critics who accuse Punjabi music of glorifying firearms, questioning why similar scrutiny is not applied to other entertainment sectors, particularly Hindi cinema. Parmish states, "In Hindi films, we often see 200 individuals wielding guns and dancing, which is perceived merely as part of a song. However, when a Punjabi artist is seen with a gun, the reaction is, 'Aap to guns ko promote kar rahe ho (you are promoting guns).' There is actually more content featuring guns in Hindi cinema than in Punjabi music."

Recently, Parmish made his debut in the web series "Kanneda," where he portrays a Punjabi rapper who becomes a gangster in 1990s Canada. The series, available on JioHotstar, also features actors such as Zeeshan Ayyub, Ranvir Shorey, Jasmin Bajwa, and Aadar Malik.
