James Cameron initially presented the opportunity to star in Avatar to Govinda, as stated by the actor. Furthermore, it was Govinda who proposed the title Avatar to the Academy Award-winning director. In a recent interview with Mukesh Khanna on his YouTube channel, Govinda revealed that he declined the lead role in the film, citing that he found the character to be 'lame.'

When James Cameron offered Avatar to Govinda

In the course of the discussion, Govinda recounted numerous instances where his advice has yielded positive outcomes for others. He reminisced about a particular event, stating, "I once declined an offer of ₹21.5 crore, a decision that still brings me discomfort. I had encountered a Sardarji in America and proposed a business concept centered around sweets and delicacies. Several years later, he informed me that the idea had been remarkably successful for him. During that time, he arranged for me to meet James Cameron, who suggested that I collaborate on a film with him. Consequently, I extended an invitation for dinner to discuss the project."

Govinda said, 'Hello? I am not doing your picture!’

He remarked, "I was the one who provided the title for the film. I had observed Rajesh Khanna with his left hand injured and thought to myself, 'He is a good person; I do not understand why he chose such a peculiar role!' Consequently, I suggested, 'There will be a sequel to Avatar!' He then responded, 'The hero is unconvincing!' (I was merely responsible for the title. I had seen Rajesh Khanna and questioned his choice of role. I only anticipated the sequel). I replied, 'Unconvincing? Govinda! No, I will not participate in your film!' He countered with an offer of 18 crores. I stated, 'I have no interest in your 18 crores.' He mentioned that the shooting would last for 410 days. I acknowledged that, but I added that if I were to paint my body, I would end up in the hospital!"
