Govinda consistently attracts attention for his candid perspectives on life and his career. Additionally, he garners interest for the notable roles he declined during his prime. Among these is the opportunity to star in James Cameron's globally acclaimed film, Avatar. In a recent extensive interview, the actor shared insights on various topics. While discussing Avatar, he disclosed that he was originally offered the role of Abhimanyu in the classic Mahabharat, produced by B.R. Chopra, which has since become one of the most revered television series. The actor further mentioned that he was dismissed from the project after he declined to accept the role, and the following details provide further context on this matter.

Govinda Rejected B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat

Govinda made an appearance on Mukesh Khanna’s YouTube channel, Bheeshma International, where he recounted being offered the role of Abhimanyu in Mahabharat by B.R. Chopra. He shared with Khanna that he often visited Chopra’s residence to assist his wife, Renu, with various household tasks. She would invite him over when she was feeling unwell, and he would help her tidy up the home—without B.R. Chopra being aware of it.

When Chopra summoned Govinda to his office to inform him that he had been chosen for the role of Abhimanyu without the need for an audition, the actor's decision to decline did not please the renowned filmmaker.

He recounted, “I arrived at his office, and he informed me that I had been selected to portray Abhimanyu in Mahabharat. I responded, ‘My mother has said no to this role. I cannot accept it.’ He inquired, ‘Who is your mother?’ I explained that she is a Sadhvi and that the film industry holds little importance for me—I only follow her guidance. At that moment, I did not perceive Chopra Sahab as a significant and powerful figure. My perspective was different.”

B.R. Chopra Threw Govinda Out of His Office

He additionally disclosed that B.R. Chopra had a quick temper, and upon learning of Govinda's rejection and its rationale, he became enraged. In his fury, he remarked, “Woh thodi pagal hai (She is mad).” Govinda further explained, “I informed him that my mother’s debut film was Sharda, and she had appeared in nine films, making her his senior. I emphasized that whatever my mother asserts holds weight, and thus, I do not possess the standing to contradict her wishes.”

Govinda recounted an incident in which his behavior prompted B.R. Chopra to summon security and have him removed from the office. "My mother advised me to perform in front of B.R. Chopra and to express, 'Aapki soch mein kha gaya' (I have consumed your thoughts), and I followed her guidance precisely. B.R. Chopra responded, 'Ye kya pagal hai, bahar nikalo isko' (Who is this mad person? Throw him out). I urged him to reflect on his actions, as he was expelling Govinda from his office," he stated.
