Kannada actress Ranya Rao is facing serious legal issues following the recovery of 14 kilograms of smuggled gold at Kempegowda International Airport earlier this week. According to a report by NDTV, the actress has admitted to the charges. In her statement, she also indicated that she had not been receiving adequate rest. Ranya has been placed in judicial custody from March 4 to March 18.

‘I am tired’

Ranya Rao expressed in her statement, "I have journeyed to Europe, America, and the Middle East, including visits to Dubai and Saudi Arabia. I would like to mention that I am currently fatigued due to insufficient rest." She further noted that although food was offered to her, she chose not to consume anything.

Additionally, Ranya Rao indicated in her statement that she believed her trial was conducted fairly, asserting that her confession was given voluntarily and without any form of coercion.

What is the case?

Ranya, recognized for her performances in Kannada cinema, including 'Maanikya' and 'Pataki,' was apprehended earlier this week by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) due to her alleged involvement in a gold smuggling operation following her return from Dubai on March 3.

Officials claim that Ranya was in possession of 14.8 kilograms of gold, which she allegedly planned to smuggle into India.

She is the stepdaughter of Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police (DGP) for the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. He stated that he was entirely "unaware" of her business dealings.

In a statement to ANI, DGP Rao mentioned that Ranya had not visited his residence since her marriage to Jatin Hukkeri four months ago. He also conveyed his astonishment and disappointment upon learning of her purported involvement in the gold smuggling case.

He remarked, "This has come as a complete shock and a huge disappointment and letdown. If any violation is there, the law will take its course."

Ranya's arrest has ignited considerable public and political discourse. Congress MLA and legal advisor to the Karnataka Chief Minister, AS Ponnanna, underscored that the law would be applied impartially, irrespective of Ranya's affiliations.
