Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were discovered deceased, along with their cherished dog, at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their passing, noting that there’s no early sign of “foul play.” Nevertheless, an investigation is still in progress, according to his office, as reported by the Mirror.
What breed of dog did Gene Hackman own?
As the intrigue around his passing deepens, more questions are popping up about his pet dog and its own death. The two-time Oscar winner was well-known for his affection for animals.
While officials haven't shared any details about Hackman's late dog, his author bio on the Simon & Schuster website mentions that he lived in Santa Fe with Arakawa and two German shepherds.
Back in 1999, while shooting The Replacements in Baltimore with Keanu Reeves, Hackman adopted a third dog. During filming, two stray pups wandered onto the set.
Initially, the Behind Enemy Lines star took the strays to an animal shelter, where they were named Gene and Keanu after himself and the Matrix actor.
Eventually, Hackman and his pianist wife chose to adopt the dog named Gene. Last year, Animal Rescue Inc honored the Superman star on his birthday.
“Happy 94th birthday to our most famous adopter Gene Hackman!! While filming The Replacements in Baltimore in 1999, two stray dogs wandered onto the movie set. Both dogs were transported to us via limousine, and the Hackmans came up the following week and adopted one of them,” the shelter shared on Facebook.
