There were reports about the actor attending a show at a performing arts centre in 2018, as well as pumping gas, doing yard work and getting a chicken sandwich at Wendy's in 2023. Aside from appearances at awards shows, he was rarely seen in the Hollywood social circuit and retired from acting about 20 years ago.

The deceased couple, along with their dog, was discovered on Wednesday at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to PA Media, preliminary medical investigations indicated that they exhibited “no external trauma.” Law enforcement officials have reported no evident signs of foul play.

A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office indicated that “In the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were taken to the Office of the Medical Investigator, where an autopsy was conducted. Initial findings revealed no external trauma on either individual.”

The official outcomes of the post-mortem examinations and toxicology analyses are still awaited, and the cause and manner of death remain undetermined, as stated by the Sheriff’s Office. Following the discovery of the bodies, the New Mexico Gas Company conducted tests on the gas lines in and around the residence. Although no issues were identified, a detective remarked that individuals exposed to gas leaks or carbon monoxide may not exhibit symptoms of poisoning.

Gene and Betsy were reportedly deceased for a period before a maintenance worker found their bodies at their residence, as reported by AP, referencing investigators. Gene, aged 95, was located in an entryway, while his 63-year-old wife, Betsy, was discovered lying on her right side in the bathroom. A space heater was positioned near her head, and it is possible that she fell when she suddenly collapsed to the floor.

The search warrant affidavit indicated that the maintenance worker noticed the front door of the home was open upon his arrival for routine maintenance on Wednesday, prompting him to contact the police after discovering the bodies.

Gene was recognized as one of the most distinguished actors of his era, portraying a range of characters from villains to heroes and antiheroes in numerous dramas, comedies, and action films from the 1960s until his retirement in the early 2000s. He had three children from a previous marriage, and although he and Betsy did not have children together, they were known for their love of German shepherds.
