In celebration of Kannada superstar Yash's birthday, fans were delighted by a special surprise as the creators of his forthcoming film, Toxic, released an engaging teaser. The teaser featured Yash in a striking appearance, revelling in a night out at a club. While fans expressed their admiration for Yash's look, the teaser also highlighted the film's director, Geetu Mohandas.
Who is Geetu Mohandas?
Geetu Mohandas, the director of Toxic, is a former actress with a notable presence in several successful films. Born Gayathri Mohandas on February 14, 1981, in Kannur, Kerala, she commenced her film career as a child artist. She adopted the name Geetu during her fourth film, Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare (1986), where she acted alongside Mohanlal at the tender age of five. Her exceptional performance in this role earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist.
Geetu's debut as an adult actress came with the film Life is Beautiful, featuring Mohanlal. Throughout her career, she has appeared in significant Malayalam films, including Thenkasi Pattanam, Valkannadi, and Akale, the latter directed by Shyamaprasad, for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam. Following her last acting role in Nammal Thammil (2009), Geetu shifted her focus to directing films.
Geetu Mohandas' path as a filmmaker
Geetu embarked on her journey in filmmaking with her short fiction film Kelkkunnundo (Are You Listening?), which she produced under her own banner, Unplugged, in 2009. The film had its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where it garnered three international awards for Best Short Fiction and was honoured with the National Film Award in India. Its impact was significant enough to be incorporated into the Kerala state syllabus for 12th-grade students in 2014.
In 2013, Geetu made her directorial debut in feature films with Liar’s Dice, featuring Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film received widespread critical acclaim, winning two National Film Awards for Best Actress and Best Cinematography. It was also selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 87th Academy Awards, although it did not advance to the shortlist.
Her subsequent feature film, Moothon (The Elder One), further established her success, earning her the Global Filmmaker Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. This film, which explored intricate themes of identity and love, solidified her status as a visionary filmmaker.
Geetu Mohandas' forthcoming film
Geetu Mohandas is poised to engage audiences with her upcoming project, Toxic, featuring Yash in the principal role. This film signifies Yash's eagerly awaited comeback to cinema following the tremendous success of KGF: Chapter 2. The release is scheduled for later this year.
