Director Gautham Vasudev Menon recently shared his insights on the successes and shortcomings of his past films during an interview. In a conversation with Hollywood Reporter India, he openly expressed his regret regarding his involvement in a Dhanush film and offered his thoughts on his latest release.

Gautham Vasudev Menon on his films

The director contemplated the success of the re-release of "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein," featuring Madhavan and Dia Mirza, which did not achieve box office success upon its initial release in 2001. He subsequently expressed the belief that his latest film, starring Varun and Raahei, might have performed better with a different lead actor.

He remarked, “I believe a film like Joshua would have reached and resonated with a significantly larger audience had it featured an actor such as Suriya. Observing films like Kill and Marco, I feel that Joshua could have been realized with talents of that calibre. With all due respect to Varun, I believe he carried the weight of his previous roles (Comali, Seeru).”

Gautham also confirmed a long-standing rumour: that the 2019 film "Enai Noki Paayum Thota," starring Dhanush and Megha Akash, remains a source of regret for him. He stated, “The only film I regret making is Ennai Nokki Paayum Thotta, and I have often joked about it. I am not evading my responsibilities, but this is my way of distancing myself from the film.”

This statement follows Gautham's recent refusal to recognize "Enai Noki Paayum Thota" as part of his filmography, as well as his comment in a Galatta Plus interview that ‘somebody else made the film.’ The project encountered multiple delays due to financial difficulties and received a tepid reception. Reports also indicate that Dhanush and Gautham experienced a falling out during the production.

Upcoming work

Gautham has recently made his directorial debut in Malayalam cinema with the film Dominic and The Ladies’ Purse, featuring Mammootty in the lead role. The film is scheduled to premiere in theatres on January 23. Additionally, his project Dhruva Natchathiram, starring Vikram, has been awaiting release for an extended period.
