Gautham Vasudev Menon: A Lone Voice in a Supportless Film Industry

Gautham Vasudev Menon's challenges in bringing his Vikram-starring film Dhruva Natchathiram: Chapter One – Yuddha Kaandam to release have become a notable narrative. In a recent discussion with Madan Gowri, the filmmaker and actor openly expressed that there is a lack of support from the film industry for individuals facing difficulties.

Gautham Vasudev Menon discusses the film industry

The interviewer inquired of Gautham to identify an individual from the film industry who has provided him with support, to which the director-actor responded negatively. When it was remarked that it is unfortunate he feels this way, Gautham replied, “I don’t have anyone like that. That’s the truth; I’m not attempting to make a statement here. However, when DN (Dhruva Natchathiram, in 2017) failed to release, no one reached out, nor did anyone show concern about the situation. Nobody is even aware of the problem.”

Gautham expressed that, in general, the film industry does not come forward in times of need. “If a film succeeds, there is no joy among others. I may sound cynical and negative, but that is the reality. There is a lack of concern. Only a few individuals, like Dhanu sir and Lingusamy, have seen the film and made an effort; they have their own challenges. I have presented the film to several studios. When these studios consult with local contacts, they are advised against taking on the film due to supposed issues, which do not exist. I am still managing to survive because the audience continues to show interest in watching the film, but I cannot afford to take a loss.”

For those unfamiliar, Dhruva Natchathiram is a film that has remained unreleased since 2017. It features Vikram, Ritu Varma, R Parthiban, Radhika Sarathkumar, Simran, and Vinayakan. The project, which initially began with Suriya in 2013, has faced significant delays due to financial difficulties and the Covid-19 pandemic. Gautham has made numerous attempts to release the film over the years.

Recent work

Gautham has also ventured into acting, having recently appeared in the 2024 films Rathnam, Hit List, Hitler, and Viduthalai 2. He is set to feature in upcoming projects such as Varaaham, Bazooka, and Thalapathy 69. Additionally, he will make his directorial debut in Malayalam with the film Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, which stars Mammootty in the lead role and is scheduled for release on January 23. His most recent directorial effort was the 2024 film Joshua Imai Pol Kaakha, which exists within the same universe as Dhruva Natchathiram.
