Actor Gajraj Rao has been gradually establishing himself as a relatable figure in slice-of-life narratives. The seasoned performer has received acclaim for his role in Dabba Cartel and is set to appear next in Prime Video's Dupahiya. In a discussion with HT, Gajraj reflects on the rise of authentic content within Indian streaming platforms and how it has transformed the landscape of storytelling in India.

Gajraj Rao on item numbers in cinema

Indian cinema has undergone a transformation towards more grounded and relatable narratives following a period dominated by grandiose epics in the 1990s and 2000s. Gajraj remarks, "There was an era when we enjoyed the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee, and Sai Paranjape. Subsequently, there was a significant phase in cinema where constraints emerged. The anxiety surrounding box office performance became prevalent. Filmmakers began to prioritize item numbers. While the audience remained unchanged, the mindset of the creators shifted. They presumed that this was what the audience desired. As a result, the scope of storytelling became increasingly restricted."

The actor remarks that the streaming landscape in India is evolving beyond the portrayal of solely crime and violence, now embracing lighter content such as Dupahiya. "OTT platforms have liberated this space by introducing shows akin to Nukkad and Buniyaad. The variety available is immense, catering to diverse tastes. Viewers have the freedom to choose whatever they wish to watch," he elaborates.

About Dupahiya

Dupahiya takes place in a quaint village located in the heart of India, where the two-wheeler symbolizes the dreams and aspirations of the middle class. The narrative revolves around the comedic mishaps that ensue following the theft of a two-wheeler. The series features notable performances from Renuka Shahane, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Sparsh Srivastava, and Bhuvan Arora, and is set to debut on Prime Video on March 7.

In a different vein, Dabba Cartel, directed by Hitesh Bhatia, was released on Netflix on February 28. This series includes a talented cast featuring Shabana Azmi, Jyotika, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, and Lillete Dubey.
