‘Funniest Thing Ever’: Internet Roasts Naga Vamsi’s No-Nepotism Remark

It is well-known that several prominent actors in the Telugu film industry hail from established families, such as the Nandamuri, Akkineni-Daggubati, Konidela-Allu, Uppalapati, and Ghattamaneni clans. However, producer Naga Vamsi recently stated in an interview with Galatta Plus that "there's not much nepotism in Telugu," a comment that left many online users perplexed. Here is a summary of their responses.

What Naga Vamsi said

When asked why discussions about nepotism are less prevalent in the southern film industries compared to the ongoing discourse in Bollywood, Vamsi promptly responded, "There’s not much nepotism in Telugu. I cannot speak for Tamil or Malayalam cinema, as I am not familiar with those industries. But in the Telugu states, nepotism is virtually nonexistent, believe me."

Faced with skepticism, he became defensive, challenging critics to provide examples of nepotism affecting the Telugu industry. He argued, "If nepotism were a significant factor in Telugu cinema, stars like Nani, Vijay Deverakonda, Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Naveen Polishetty, and Adivi Sesh would not have achieved such success. Nithiin and Sharwanand are not products of nepotism in Telugu."

Vamsi further questioned whether Allu Arjun or Ram Charan could be labeled merely as "nepo kids," given their considerable efforts to reach their current status. It is important to note that, despite the producer's assertions, Nithiin is the son of distributor N. Sudhakar Reddy, and Sharwanand is related to actor Ram Pothineni, being the son of producer Sravanthi Ravi Kishore.

How did the internet react

Even the most dedicated fans of Tollywood actors expressed confusion, as a significant portion of the industry comprises individuals with familial ties to the film sector.

One commenter on YouTube remarked, “Is there really no nepotism in Telugu cinema? Varun Tej is landing films worth 50 crores consecutively, despite his previous films being complete failures. For instance, Narne Nitin, who is NTR's brother-in-law, is securing multiple projects while Sangeeth Shobhan, the star of MAD, has yet to sign on for a second film.”

Another user shared a clip of the interview on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Naga Vamsi claiming 'there's no nepotism in the Telugu film industry' is perhaps the most amusing thing I've ever heard!” Additionally, someone posted a meme featuring Brahmanandam to illustrate Vamsi’s assertion of ‘Asal nepotism ye ledu’ (Nepotism doesn’t exist) during the interview.

One user on X even referred to it as a 'clown-to-clown conversation,' as some fans defended Vamsi’s remarks, commenting, “TFI Banisas are backing Naga Vamsi's stance on nepotism.”

Another user highlighted that the leading stars in Tollywood come from film families, stating, “Naga Vamsi is perpetually self-absorbed and oblivious to reality. According to him, there is no nepotism in the Telugu industry. Meanwhile: #Prabhas #Ramcharan #JrNTR #AlluArjun.”

A different commenter noted, “The entire Tollywood industry thrives on family connections. Just think about Jr. NTR's early films and the implications of this.” Some even pointed out that Vamsi himself is part of a film family, as his uncle is producer Suryadevara Radha Krishna.
