It is a rare occurrence for a young filmmaker to decline the chance to direct the renowned superstar Rajinikanth. However, this was the case when Lyca Productions approached Malayalam actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran with a proposal to collaborate with the iconic Vettaiyan star.

During the teaser launch event for Prithviraj’s directorial venture L2: Empuraan in Kochi on Sunday, the Malayalam actor disclosed that initial discussions had taken place with Lyca Productions regarding a film featuring Rajinikanth.

Prithviraj on why he turned down the chance to direct Rajinikanth

Rajinikanth, stating, “Subaskaran sir first contacted me with the chance to create a film for Lyca Productions starring Rajinikanth sir. The opportunity was incredibly appealing for a new director like myself, and I endeavored to develop a suitable concept. However, they had a specific timeline, and as I was only a part-time director, I was unable to formulate a subject for Rajini sir.”

Although the project did not come to fruition, the actor of Aadujeevitham mentioned that it fostered a friendship between him and Subaskaran, who made it a point to meet the producer during his visits to London.

“Through these informal discussions, we began to share our aspirations in cinema,” he noted. This exchange also opened doors to two additional opportunities. “Firstly, Lyca Productions expressed interest in having me undertake a significant and ambitious project as an actor. I hope it materializes in the future. I agreed because it was such an ambitious film; I read the entire script and was captivated by the content,” Prithviraj explained.

How Lyca Productions came onboard L2 Empuraan

Regarding how Lyca Productions became involved with L2: Empuraan, Prithviraj Sukumaran clarified that the Rajinikanth film did not proceed, “not due to my inability, but rather because I was unable to.” Subaskaran then inquired about his latest directorial project – the Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan – and how Lyca Productions could “be part of this dream of yours.”

This development prompted the production house to embark on its inaugural project within the Malayalam film industry with the upcoming release scheduled for March 27. Empuraan, the second installment of the Lucifer franchise, will also feature Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Indrajith Sukumaran reprising their respective roles.
