Moon Tae Il, known as former NCT member Taeil, has been formally charged with special quasi-rape for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in conjunction with other individuals. Additionally, it has been reported that a request for an arrest warrant for the accused singer was submitted but subsequently rejected.
Arrest warrant request for former NCT's Taeil was denied
K-media outlets eventually reported on the significant news on March 4, but legal sources indicated that the Women and Children's Crime Investigation Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, led by Chief Prosecutor Kim Ji Hye, initiated legal proceedings against Taeil and two associates under the Sexual Violence Punishment Act on February 28.
Preliminary reports that have sent shockwaves through the K-pop industry and its numerous fandoms allege that the former NCT member and his accomplices sexually assaulted an intoxicated woman in June 2024.
Additional suspects linked to the crime have participated in the prosecution's investigation. However, Taeil reportedly did not comply with the summons, citing health concerns. It appears he has provided a medical certificate along with a statement from his lawyer to support his absence.
All that we know about Taeil's crime so far
In June 2024, the Seoul Bangbae Police Station sought an arrest warrant for three individuals, including a former member of NCT, following a report from the victim. However, the court ultimately rejected the request, stating that the suspects had confessed to the sexual assault, thus negating the necessity for an arrest. Two months later, in August, authorities called Taeil in for questioning and subsequently referred the case to prosecution in September.
Despite allegations of special quasi-rape, which pertains to instances involving a weapon or multiple assailants sexually assaulting a victim who is unconscious and unable to resist, rumours regarding the involvement of a weapon have been refuted.
Former NCT Taeil's contract with SM Entertainment officially terminated
Taeil, a member of NCT's rotational and fixed sub-units NCT U and NCT 127, was removed from the K-pop group in October 2024 following the emergence of a lawsuit against him. At that time, fans observed that his name remained listed individually on the official website of SM Entertainment, the group's label.
Recently, the South Korean entertainment company has ended its exclusive contract with the individual in question.
The company released the following statement: "We would like to inform you that the exclusive contract between our company and Taeil has been terminated as of October 15, 2024.
"Taeil is currently undergoing a prosecutorial investigation related to a criminal case. This situation provides sufficient grounds for contract termination and undermines the trust necessary for him to continue as an artist. Consequently, we have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the exclusive contract.
"We sincerely apologize for any distress caused by our former artist Taeil." (AllKpop).
