Folk singer Sharda Sinha, known for iconic Chhatth songs, dies at 72. She was admitted to AIIMS Delhi for treatment last month, news agency ANI reported on Tuesday night. Her son Anshuman had announced the news earlier on X (formerly Twitter).

On Tuesday evening, her son Anshuman confirmed the news with a picture and a message on the singer's official X (formerly Twitter) account. The message read in Hindi: "Your prayers and love will always be with mother. Chhathi maiya has called mother to her. She is no longer with us in her physical form.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Sharda Sinha was critical and ‘fighting for her life’ at AIIMS in Delhi. In a post on X, AIIMS said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is continuously monitoring Sinha's condition and has prayed for her speedy recovery.
Sharda Sinha's illustrious career
Sinha, a Padma Bhushan recipient synonymous with folk songs in Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Maghahi languages, was on ventilator support following a health complication due to multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.
The 72-year-old singer was admitted to the intensive care unit of Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital , the cancer institute of AIIMS, last month. The singer has been battling multiple myeloma since 2017.
Known as Bihar Kokila, Supaul-born Sharda Sinha was famous in her native state and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh courtesy her folk songs, sung on occasions like Chhath Puja and weddings.

Her popular tracks include Chhathi Maiya Aayi Na Duaariya, Kartik Maas Ijoriya, Dwar Chekai, Patna Se, and Koyal Bin. Over the years, she also lent her voice to several Bollywood film songs, the most notable of which are Taar Bijli from Gangs of Wasseypur—II, Babul from Hum Aapke Hain Koun, and Kahe Toh Se Sajna from Maine Pyar Kiya.
