Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane Sees AI as a Threat, Fears It Will Replace Creative Talent
18 days ago | 5 Views
Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane possesses a realistic perspective regarding the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology within the industry, acknowledging its permanence. He emphasizes the necessity of creating a well-defined framework for the integration of AI to ensure that it does not supplant human talent.
In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Vikramaditya discussed the importance of a measured approach to concentrate on the writing of his projects, reflecting on his journey as a storyteller and his responsibilities as a jury member for the second edition of the Red Lorry Film Festival, an event curated by BookMyShow.
On being a jury member
Vikramaditya expresses his enthusiasm for joining the film festival jury, attributing his interest to his passion for cinema. He states, “My fundamental desire to support and view films invigorates me. Any chance to experience films, particularly those I have not yet seen, excites me.”
The films selected for the inaugural Competition Segment have been revealed. This segment comprises two categories: The Frontrunner (Best Film) and Fresh Frames (Best Debut Film). The winners in both categories will be announced at the festival's opening ceremony on March 20.
He further remarks, “Over the past few weeks, I have been viewing the titles in the competition segment for the Red Lorry Film Festival, and it has proven to be a profoundly enriching experience. The remarkable diversity among the films and their creators is outstanding. Each film possesses its own distinct voice, narrative, and perspective, making the task of selecting a winner both challenging and fulfilling.”
On perception around film festivals in India
In the realm of film festivals, Vikramaditya asserts that there remains a misconception that these events cater solely to artistic cinema.
"This notion is outdated. Film festivals showcase a diverse array of genres, including exceptional horror, action, comedy, and political films. They serve as venues where individuals can discover films that resonate with their preferences. Festivals also cultivate one's cinematic appreciation. Furthermore, they are significant platforms for business transactions, with numerous films being sold," he explains.
On the emergence of AI
Vikramaditya, recognized for his work on projects such as Udaan, Lootera, CTRL, Sacred Games, Jubilee, and Black Warrant, possesses a pragmatic perspective on the increasing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the industry, acknowledging it as an inevitable development.
“However, I perceive AI as a potential danger. The risk does not stem from its creators but rather from individuals with financial power who seek to utilize it for their own economic benefit. The real threat arises from those in positions of authority who might say, ‘I can implement AI and consequently reduce my workforce by X number of employees,’ or ‘I can employ AI and eliminate X number of jobs,’” he articulates.
The filmmaker expresses concern that this issue is likely to escalate in the future. “A certain equilibrium is necessary. We must establish safeguards to prevent such occurrences,” he emphasizes, referring to his work on Black Warrant.
Vikramaditya further asserts, “AI is undoubtedly a permanent fixture in our lives. I do not dispute that. It will be integrated into our daily existence, regardless of our preferences. However, it is essential to adopt a structured approach to its implementation. The jobs and livelihoods of individuals should not be jeopardized as a result.”
On his future projects
He has experienced a hectic few months, engaging in projects like CTRL, directed by Ananya Panday, and the release of Black Warrant. Currently, he is opting for a more leisurely pace.
"I am not involved in any projects at the moment, absolutely none. I am on a break and returning to writing. I am exploring what other avenues I might pursue," he concludes, expressing hope that the streaming service will approve a second season of Black Warrant.
