Hrithik Roshan rose to prominence as a superstar with his inaugural film, Rakesh Roshan's romantic drama Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, released 25 years ago. However, the collaborative dynamic between father and son during the production was not devoid of disagreements.

What Rakesh, Pinky said

In the recent Netflix India docuseries The Roshans, Hrithik's mother, Pinky Roshan, shared her observations, stating, “I noticed he seemed a bit down at times. I would ask, ‘What’s wrong? You don’t seem well.’ Eventually, he would express his desire to approach things differently, while his father would insist, ‘No, this is fine.’ As a mother, it pained me to witness this. I would retreat to my room and discuss it with my husband, asking, ‘What happened today?’ He would respond, ‘He doesn’t understand anything! I am the director! I know how to make films.’ I would counter, ‘But at least listen to him.’”

Rakesh also reflected on their interactions, stating, “Hrithik and I often had disagreements. He would suggest, ‘Papa, I want to do it this way,’ to which I would respond, ‘No Duggu, that won’t look good. Do it this way.’ I had to navigate this situation carefully, as he is both my son and an actor. He faced a similar conflict, as I am his father and also the director. Thus, we did have arguments, but they typically concluded on a positive note,” Rakesh explained.

What Hrithik said

Hrithik recounted that he frequently voiced his frustrations on set. When Rakesh Roshan failed to color-correct a significant portion of the film before dispatching some prints abroad, Hrithik became quite upset. However, for the first time, Rakesh confronted him directly, expressing to Pinky that he was doing everything possible for his son's benefit, yet Hrithik did not seem to appreciate it.

Hrithik subsequently discovered that significant stakes were involved with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, as their home and vehicles had been mortgaged. Fortunately, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai emerged as a major success. Pinky expressed her relief that they were able to preserve their home. The film featured performances by Ameesha Patel and Anupam Kher.
