Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule features Fahadh Faasil as a self-absorbed cop named Bhanwar Singh Shekawat, who goes head-to-head with Allu Arjun’s character, Pushpa Raj, a red sanders smuggler. After the movie hit theaters, fans discovered a 2022 interview where Fahadh talked to Cue Studio about how a web series evolved into a film that was eventually divided into two parts.

It was a Netflix web series.

Fahadh shared that when Sukumar first reached out to him about the project, it was meant to be a single film, with his character making an appearance at the interval. “There was no Pushpa 1 or Pushpa 2, just one Pushpa. He started by telling me about the police station scene, the interval, and then my character’s role. He wanted to portray someone without an identity who manages to achieve everything in life. He fulfills his mother’s dreams and overcomes his childhood struggles, only to have someone come along and remind him of all his past issues,” Fahadh explained.

But then Sukumar decided to break the film into two parts and even mentioned the possibility of a third. He added, “At first, the idea was about red sandalwood… Sukku sir was planning to create a web series for Netflix, which meant there was a lot of content to explore. He wanted to wrap up Pushpa 1 at the beginning of the story. After I started shooting, he told me that even if he gave me my lines ahead of time, he might change them on set. But he allowed me the time to learn them; what more could you ask for from a director?”

FaFa handled things with me on set

Sukumar recently talked about Fahadh at a press conference in Hyderabad, sharing how the actor managed to handle his habit of changing lines even though he doesn't speak Telugu.

He mentioned that he couldn't say much about Fahadh during the pre-release phase, adding, “I’m really grateful to him; he feels like a brother to me. He brought all my ideas to life. I often switched up the dialogues on set, but he never complained, even though he’s a Malayali and doesn’t know Telugu. There was always a positive vibe whenever he was around.”

Pushpa 2: The Rule is the follow-up to the 2021 film Pushpa: The Rise. The movie wraps up by hinting at the storyline for Pushpa 3: The Rampage, but it’s still uncertain if Fahadh’s character, Bhanwar, will return.
