Sharmila Tagore has appeared in numerous highly regarded Bengali films throughout her extensive career. The seasoned actress is making her comeback to Bengali cinema with Suman Ghosh's Puratawn (The Ancient). In this film, Sharmila portrays the role of Rituparna Sengupta's mother, a character who is determined to preserve her memories, spaces, and values as she approaches her 80th birthday.

The casting of Sharmila Tagore in the film presents a fascinating paradox. Rituparna elaborates on this, stating, "She possesses extensive knowledge across various subjects and remains well-informed. She enjoys exploring new ideas and concepts that she has yet to encounter. She embodies the essence of a modern woman, rather than being confined to the traditional notions of Puratawn (smiles). This characteristic reflects how she upholds the values associated with Puratawn,” she adds.
On what Puratawn Stands For
Regarding the significance of Puratawn, the film emphasizes the importance of memories and the value of one's history. Rituparna remarks, “Everyone cherishes their old schoolbooks, the diary kept by their grandmother, and the memories of their school days. It evokes such nostalgia and purity. I still possess my father's glasses and my mother's wallet… these items are invaluable. The emotional connection remains, and that aspect holds great significance for me. I teach my children the importance of remembering the values instilled in them. While living in the present, it is essential not to forget the past."
"In Puratawn, we aim to illustrate that this connection endures. It is a beautiful exploration of relationships. It serves as a tribute to motherhood and is something that resonates deeply with me,” the actor concludes with a smile.
Puratawn, produced by Bhavna Aaj O Kal and presented by Rituparna Sengupta, is set to be released in theaters on April 11.
