Losliya Mariyanesan, an actor with three films to her credit, is eagerly anticipating the release of her second film of the year, titled Gentlewoman, in which she stars alongside actor Lijomol Jose. Originally from Sri Lanka, Losliya expresses her excitement about maintaining a busy schedule with consecutive film projects. “Things are progressing very well, and I am delighted with the back-to-back releases, following Housekeeping and now Gentlewoman.”

Five years ago, Losliya gained recognition as a contestant on Bigg Boss Tamil 3, becoming one of the season's notable personalities. “I believe I received more than I anticipated prior to my participation in Bigg Boss. My move from Colombo to Chennai was not solely for the purpose of joining Bigg Boss; my aspiration was to become an anchor. Having grown up watching Tamil cinema, I have always harbored a deep interest in it. Coming from Trincomalee, a small town, the idea of relocating to Chennai seemed quite ambitious at the time.”

Losliya Mariyanesan Interview: I did not come to India with the intention to act

In her interview, Losliya Mariyanesan stated, “I did not come to India with the intention to pursue acting.” After establishing a career in anchoring and news reading, she realized that her true calling lay in Chennai, where greater opportunities awaited her. With an uncertain future ahead and a desire to step outside her comfort zone, Losliya made the bold decision to relocate to India. “Having grown up watching Vijay TV, working there was a dream realized. However, when the opportunity to enter Bigg Boss arose, I approached it with no expectations other than gaining exposure,” she remarked.

Following her experience on the show, Losliya discovered that she had connected with the audience far more than she had anticipated. "I am immensely thankful to be working in this city, which has bestowed upon me so much affection from its people. Bigg Boss was never solely about the challenges; it was about revealing one's true self. I have undergone significant transformations, and I am grateful for this opportunity. I received more than I had hoped for."

In the film Gentlewoman, Losliya portrays the character Anna, sharing the screen with Lijomol. "I have known the film's director, Joshua, for some time. He presented the script for Gentlewoman at a moment when I was seeking a role that would allow me to showcase my acting abilities. As I mentioned earlier, I did not initially come to India with the intention of pursuing acting. However, once I entered the film industry and embraced this profession, I aimed to excel. I believe that Gentlewoman has challenged me as an actor more than the three films I have completed thus far."

‘Lijomol is a phenomenal actor’

Regarding her co-star Lijomol, she expresses her admiration: "She is an exceptional actor, and I was thrilled to share the screen with her. This film features numerous long takes and extensive dialogues. Observing her express emotions and react made me forget about the cameras. It was a significant opportunity for me to work alongside Lijo. I approached Gentlewoman as a challenge to undertake a demanding role."

Discussing her character Anna, Losliya remarks, "It is common to stereotype women based on their clothing and lifestyle choices. This film delves into that theme, illustrating how Anna and Poorani (Lijomol) are perceived differently despite being in similar circumstances. The police's perspectives on both women vary, leading to judgments that will shift by the film's conclusion."

The actor believes that the expanding realm of social media has emerged as a more effective avenue for entering the film industry. “It provides a chance to reach a wide audience. However, regardless of whether one comes from television, reality shows, or social media, cinema represents a vast and distinct landscape. It is essential to navigate this terrain thoughtfully and judiciously when selecting projects. While gaining entry may seem straightforward, the challenge lies in sustaining a career, which requires careful consideration.”

As someone who frequently travels between Sri Lanka and India for her career, Losliya expresses her longing for home, noting that it has been two years since her last visit. “Last Christmas, I invited my family to visit. It is difficult when they return, but that is simply how life unfolds.”

Following her experience with Gentlewoman, Losliya feels she has gained valuable insights into expressions and acting from her collaboration with Lijomol. “Throughout the filming, there was always music or a background score playing. This was my first experience shooting in such a manner. The director’s unique perspective was also something new for me, which is why we encourage you to watch Gentleman without a specific viewpoint.”
