Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, the first father-son team to ever host the 2024 Emmys, are mixing things up. The hilarious duo is up to the task of being first-time hosts.
Eugene and Dan Levy: Breaking new ground as Emmys hosts
In a People interview, Dan Levy said his dad and he are not stand-up comedians, so they approach it differently. They are dedicated workers and want to make it the best. Their goal is to make everyone feel very welcome and have a joyful celebration. This is a special night for many, and they want to help make it joyful.
Eugene takes a minute to think. As first-timers, they hope that this year's show will have enough laughs, charm, goodwill, and love for the medium that gave both his son and himself a start in this business.
Between 2015 and 2020, the two were regulars on the Emmy stage as co-stars of the smash sitcom Schitt's Creek. Dan earned four for his contributions to Schitt's Creek, including writing, directing, supporting acting, and creating, while Eugene took home two for SCTV Network 90 and two for the show itself.
Eugene Levy's hope for a memorable show
They won't ask experienced hosts for advice, even though this is their first gig. According to Eugene, they are working with some very funny writers who seem to be in sync with their sensibility, and both Dan and himself have spent quite a few years writing comedy, so he thinks they are all in a favourable groove so far.
"My son," Eugene responds when asked whose turn it is to exchange additional notes, as he aspires to be flawless.
Dan says the two of them send about the same number of emails, but he's less computer-savvy. They are currently addressing some technical difficulties, but rest assured, everything is under control.
Planning outfits and fashion choices for the night
When planning their outfits for the evening, the two are taking slightly different approaches. Dan has hinted at the possibility of many suits, stating, "I just feel like if you have the opportunity, why the hell not?"
He immediately told his dad that he was thinking of changing it up during the show. And his response was, "Enjoy yourself." Dan added that his dad will be his rock and provide all costume changes.
Eugene said he won't compete with his son in fashion. Hosting is a complex task, but having each other as a backup made it much more appealing.
The main draw was that they were all in this together and could count on each other's support. Dan remarked that they assumed they had such a positive rapport that it lessened the impact of how daunting the process can be. They will have a delightful bit of humorous banter back and forth throughout the night.
Eugene said that they worked so well as a team opening the 2020 SAG Awards, let alone the six years they worked together on Schitt’s Creek, and it’s that chemistry that they hope is very much present on the stage at the Emmys.
Handling pre-show anxiety and preparation techniques
Even now, some anxiety persists. Dan manages the situation by maintaining his composure. He is worried, so overthinking would be the worst thing he could do. By then, they should be well prepared and not worried about it. For him, it's novel. He is adopting a new practice of not worrying and overthinking everything.
Eugene concluded by saying that for him, it’s yoga and meditation before the big show. If someone buys into that, they may not fully understand who Eugene is.
Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium) will broadcast this year's Emmys live in India on Monday, September 16 at 5:30 am.
