14 days ago | 5 Views
The creators of Empuraan aimed to resolve the controversy sparked by the right-wing backlash by implementing 24 edits and resubmitting the Malayalam film for re-censorship. The newly re-censored version of the Mohanlal-led film has been released in theaters; however, it has presented a new challenge for the producers. The re-edited sequel to Lucifer is expected to miss out on IMAX screenings due to the significant costs associated with that format.
IMAX screenings of Empuraan take a hit
Prior to its highly anticipated debut on March 27, 2025, Empuraan garnered attention as the first Malayalam film to be released in IMAX format. However, the film encountered significant criticism, particularly from right-wing groups, which compelled the creators of the Prithviraj Sukumaran-directed project to modify or silence certain segments. The revised edition is set to be released in theaters on April 2, 2025. Regrettably, this edited version will not be shown in IMAX theaters.According to reports, IMAX showings of Empuraan, the follow-up to the 2019 hit Lucifer, are expected to be available only until April 2 (Wednesday) because of the newly censored and edited version. The cost of the reuploading process is said to exceed $50,000, rendering it an unfeasible option.
Empuraan undergoes 24 cuts
Empuraan became embroiled in controversy when right-wing supporters expressed their discontent with specific scenes depicting the childhood of Zayed Masood. Many supporters were offended by these portrayals, leading some devoted fans of Lalettan to cancel their tickets in protest. Additionally, the RSS-affiliated publication Organiser published a harsh article containing serious accusations against director Prithviraj Sukumaran and writer Murali Gopy.In response to the criticism, Mohanlal, the lead actor of Empuraan, expressed his remorse through a Facebook post. Director Prithviraj, who also appeared in the film, shared this post but has not yet issued any direct comments regarding the controversy that has erupted. Meanwhile, writer Murali Gopy has not provided a response, although producer Antony Perumbavoor has stated that all parties involved agreed to the edits made to L2E.
Empuraan serves as the sequel to Lucifer, which can be streamed on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium at promotional rates.
