The debate regarding the film L2 Empuraan, featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal, has escalated to the Parliament. BJP MP and actor Suresh Gopi commented on the 24 edits made to the film, asserting that no member of the production team was 'pressured' to implement these modifications. Here is his statement.

Suresh Gopi addresses L2 Empuraan controversy

MP John Brittas asserted in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that 'political pressure' influenced the film's portrayal of the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response, Suresh stated, “The fact is… this is the only truth I must convey to Indian citizens. There was no censorship pressure on the producers of L2 Empuraan.”

Suresh further mentioned that he requested the removal of his name from the film's thank you card during the editing process, saying, “I was the first to contact the producers and ask them to take my name off the thank you card at the film's beginning. This is the truth. I am willing to accept any consequences if this is proven false. The decision to remove 17 scenes from the film was made by the producers and the lead actor, with the director's consent.”

This is not the first occasion the actor-politician has addressed the film. He previously spoke to the media, stating, according to ANI, “So, what is the controversy? Who initiated it? It’s all about business. Manipulating public perception for profit. That’s all there is to it.”

The controversy surrounding L2 Empuraan

L2 Empuraan included fictional portrayals of the 2002 Gujarat riots, impacting the character Zayed Masood, played by Prithviraj. The depiction sparked controversy, prompting the filmmakers to seek voluntary edits from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Several modifications have been implemented, such as altering the name and representation of Abhimanyu Singh’s character, adjusting the portrayal of violence against women, and referencing a religious structure, among other changes.
