Amid ongoing debates regarding the content depicted in Empuraan, information regarding the recommendations from the Censor Board has emerged online. Reports from Manorama Online indicate that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) requested just two edits in the film directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. According to these reports, the filmmakers have complied with both of these requests. Below are the specifics of the modifications requested by the Censor Board for the second installment of the Lucifer trilogy.

2 cuts sought in Empuraan

The Central Board of Film Certification requested a reduction of six seconds from a scene depicting violence against women. Additionally, a scene that mentioned the National Flag was shortened by four seconds, according to a report from Manorama Online. The filmmakers complied with these cuts mandated by the board, as stated in the reports. Prior to its release, the film received a UA 16+ certification from the board.

Empuraan opens to mixed reviews

The eagerly awaited Malayalam film, Empuraan, premiered in theaters on March 27, 2025, but received a range of reviews. While L2E garnered praise for its exceptional filmmaking, some viewers expressed discontent with the film's content. Right-wing supporters have voiced their opposition to the filmmakers regarding specific scenes. Nevertheless, neither director Prithviraj Sukumaran nor lead actor Mohanlal has commented on the controversy to date.

Empuraan makes big bucks

Despite the mixed reviews and controversy surrounding Empuraan, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film has reportedly crossed Rs 100 crore at the worldwide box office. The makers have announced on social media that the Mohanlal-starrer has achieved the feat within two days of its release.

Conversely, industry analyst Sacnilk indicated that Empuraan achieved net collections of Rs 32.75 crore in India. The Malayalam film, which received substantial promotion from its leading actors and director, had an extensive global release in several languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Empuraan, the Lucifer sequel

The plot of Empuraan picks up from where the hit film Lucifer ended. The 2019 film narrates the events in Kerala after a tall political figure dies, leading to a power struggle. Lucifer is available for streaming on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium.
