Ektaa Kapoor Blames Viewers for Poor Performance of Her Films in Theaters
2 days ago | 5 Views
Filmmaker Ektaa Kapoor recently commented on the ongoing discussion regarding the perceived inferiority of Indian content compared to internationally recognized films and television series. She attributed the box office failures of productions such as Superboys of Malegaon and The Buckingham Murders to the audience's preferences.
On Friday, Ektaa expressed her thoughts on Instagram, candidly offering a 'solution' for filmmakers lamenting the quality of Indian content in comparison to global standards. She stated, "When Indian creators lament that our content does not measure up to internationally acclaimed TV series and films, I question whether it stems from ego, frustration, or simply misguided accusations."

Ektaa says audience is the real culprit
She also asserted that the primary reason for the box office failures of films such as Superboys of Malegaon and The Buckingham Murders lies not with the industry, but rather with the audience. She stated, "Can we hold the true culprits—the ‘audience’—accountable? Since it is less engaging to criticize individuals in such vague terms (as we cannot confront them on social media), let us acknowledge that a significant portion of India is still evolving in terms of content! One might refer to it as a phase of adolescence."

Ektaa urges creators to put money into filmmaking
She also criticized profit-oriented corporate studios and streaming services, including her own involvement, by stating, "These profit-driven corporate studios and applications focus solely on financial metrics (myself included)!!! Filmmaking and content creation should not be viewed as a business—it is an art form! Therefore, I encourage creators to invest their own resources… Issue resolved!!!!”

Is Ektaa Kapoor throwing shade at Anurag Kashyap?
Reddit users swiftly conjectured that Ektaa's remarks were aimed at Anurag Kashyap, who recently criticized Netflix India for its so-called "corrupt" leadership and absence of creative direction. While Kashyap commended the international Netflix series Adolescence, he expressed discontent with the platform's handling of Indian content.
A Reddit user remarked, "She is criticizing Anurag Kashyap for labeling Netflix India as corrupt, particularly given that its leader, Monika Shergill, is a friend of Ektaa." Another user added, "This seems to be a dig at Anurag Kashyap—she deliberately mentioned 'adolescence' right after he complimented the show."
Anurag Kashyap’s criticism of Netflix India
The filmmaker criticized Netflix India, labeling it as 'corrupt' and expressed his feelings of envy and jealousy. He referenced a recent post by Ted Sarandos, which stated, "every once in a while, one comes along that pushes into brand new territories, defies the limits of creativity, and features career-defining performances." The filmmaker expressed skepticism about this claim, arguing that the content available on Netflix India is quite the opposite, describing it as a chaotic mess. He suggested that had this project been pitched to them, it would likely have been rejected or condensed into a 90-minute film, which he deemed impossible due to its ambiguous ending.
Reflecting on his previous interactions with the platform, he criticized the team for their apparent lack of empathy, courage, and competence, attributing these shortcomings to insecurity and frequent personnel changes. Kashyap questioned the feasibility of producing impactful and authentic content in what he characterized as a "dishonest and morally corrupt" environment at Netflix India, asserting that these issues were supported by leadership in Los Angeles.
He further condemned the 'hypocrisy' of Netflix's executives, stating, "This hypocrisy from Ted and Bella regarding the Indian market of 1.4 billion people reveals that their sole focus is on increasing subscriptions, with no other concerns. There was a time when Eric Barmack would reach out on Facebook to collaborate with Netflix, but now they present us with poorly executed projects like 'saare jahan se achcha,' which is inadequately written and half-finished. This project has already undergone two directorial changes and has been filmed twice, which is frustrating. I find myself feeling envious of shows like 'Adolescence' and hopeless about the current state of affairs."
