On Sunday morning, Ed Sheeran astonished his fans in Bengaluru with an impromptu performance on Church Street. However, his performance was interrupted by the police, leading to a video of the event going viral on social media. While some fans expressed their discontent with the police's actions, others commended them.

Reddit users respond to Ed Sheeran's viral incident

A Reddit user posted the video with the caption, "A police officer ended the show when Ed Sheeran surprised everyone on Church Street" (accompanied by laughing emojis). In the footage, the artist was seen performing his hit song "Shape of You," dressed casually and wearing sunglasses, when the police disconnected his microphone. The singer could be heard addressing the audience, stating, “We have permission to be here, but this policeman is shutting it down."

The video sparked mixed reactions among fans. One Reddit user commented, "Hahaha. One of those ‘Only in India’ moments." Another user shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “International artist @edsheeran was stopped from performing in #Bangalore at Church Street. Even though he had permission. Literally! The cops pulled the plug. So unfortunate!”

Another comment on Reddit noted, "It’s just very embarrassing." A different user humorously remarked, "Iska challan pounds mein niklega (his challan will be issued in pounds)."

Some individuals expressed support for the police, asserting that they were "acting appropriately" and remarked, "He’s simply fulfilling his duties!" Commending the officer, one commenter noted, "Lmaooo, the officer shows no bias between foreigners and local street performers! He deserves recognition." Another individual drew a parallel to the Pushpa 2 stampede incident, stating, "This will obstruct traffic, cause problems, and ultimately result in a stampede. Have you forgotten the chaos that ensued when Allu Arjun visited the cinema to surprise his fans?" Sheeran maintained that he had obtained permission for the street performance. The Bengaluru Police have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.

Ed Sheeran's India Tour 2025  

The British artist is presently in India as part of his Mathematics tour. He has already performed in Hyderabad and Chennai, where he collaborated with Indian composer A.R. Rahman for a special rendition of the classic song Urvasi. Sheeran is scheduled to perform today (February 8) in Bengaluru, followed by shows in Shillong (February 12) and Delhi NCR (February 15).
