Tabu has embarked on an international journey by entering the expansive realm of the Dune universe with the web series, Dune: Prophecy. Her co-star, Emily Watson, has characterized the experience of collaborating with Tabu as a cherished memory that will last a lifetime.
In discussing the prequel series to Denis Villeneuve's acclaimed Dune films, Emily Watson reflects on her partnership with Tabu and other aspects of the production. She notes that a deep connection developed between them as they navigated the contrasts and commonalities of their distinct backgrounds.
On working with Tabu
In the series available for streaming in India on JioCinema Premium, Emily portrays Valya Harkonnen, the leader of a religious order known as the Sisterhood, while Tabu plays the role of Sister Francesca.
Emily expressed her sentiments about collaborating with Tabu, stating, "Working with Tabu was an incredibly enriching experience. She is a genuine gem, a kind-hearted individual, and an exceptional actress. We shared some wonderful moments," during an exclusive roundtable interview with Hindustan Times.
She further remarked, "We enjoyed dining together and discussing our respective experiences in Western cinema, exploring the similarities and differences. It was truly delightful."
Reflecting on their time in Budapest, Emily noted, "Being in Budapest with her was remarkable, especially witnessing the excitement of the Indian community there, who were thrilled by her presence. It was a joy to observe."
On the show
The series is positioned 10,000 years before the narrative of Frank Herbert’s influential novel Dune, which Denis adapted into two films. Released in 2021 and 2023, these films featured Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, the Emperor’s Bene Gesserit Truthsayer, while Lady Jessica, the Bene Gesserit mother of the main character Paul, was portrayed by Timothée Chalamet.
The storyline centres on two Harkonnen sisters as they confront forces that jeopardize the future of humanity and lay the groundwork for the renowned sect that will eventually be recognized as the Bene Gesserit. The cast also includes Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Johdi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, and Shalom Brune-Franklin.
In a recent interview, Emily reflected on the demanding aspects of her role. “Taking on the responsibility of being decisively in charge was challenging. It is not my usual comfort zone as an actor. Finding my footing in that was quite a task,” the 57-year-old actress remarked.
Commending the show's concept, she stated, “The cast comprises a diverse array of actors that can captivate interest. Whether portraying striking individuals or those with darker natures, each role is performed with utmost conviction. The writing and character-driven drama are exceptionally well-crafted.”
On 50-plus actors finding a footing in Hollywood
For Emily, the series signifies a transformation within Hollywood. “In our 30s, we likely would have exchanged glances and acknowledged that this is a game of diminishing returns,” she remarks, adding, “There will not be many significant roles. If you are still active in this field at 50, you are achieving something noteworthy.”
“Now, we find ourselves at the forefront of a television series. A shift has occurred, especially in the realm of long-form television, though not as much in Hollywood itself. In long-form television, there is no room for not just one, but two leading women in their 50s within a sci-fi narrative,” she concludes, emphasizing that this development is a beacon of optimism.
