Dubbed South Indian Films Drive Bollywood Revival: Nani Weighs In

Bollywood has experienced a challenging phase, as numerous films have failed to perform well at the box office, even though some have garnered critical acclaim. In 2024, six out of the top ten highest-grossing Indian films for the year originated from south India, with Pushpa 2 and Kalki 2898 AD occupying the leading positions. When Siddharth Kannan inquired of Nani whether he thinks dubbed south films are ‘rescuing Bollywood,’ here’s his response.

Nani on south films ‘saving Bollywood’

Nani stated that every film industry experiences a slowdown, noting that Tollywood faced a challenging summer last year before making a recovery. “I believe saving is not the right term. However, I think balancing it is the correct term. Occasionally, even Telugu experiences a lull, and films may not succeed for 3-4 months. Last summer, we had to close theatres because of it. No film was performing well during the peak season. We always return with double the energy, which will also occur in Hindi,” he mentioned.

He further noted that the audience currently desires a great film regardless of the language, which benefits talented filmmakers, stating, “The positive aspect now is that everyone simply wants a good film, regardless of the language. Everyone just wants an outstanding film. This motivates us to strive for excellence in filmmaking. Hindi cinema has produced some of the finest films that we enjoyed growing up, and I’m confident it will make a major comeback. Sometimes, it’s necessary to endure these slow phases so you can pause and assess, restart the engine and return with double the energy. ”
