Drew Barrymore recently discussed a rather awkward encounter with Martha Stewart that became widely circulated after Stewart humorously pushed Barrymore away during an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show in November 2024. 

This incident attracted significant online attention, with numerous viewers perceiving it as an uncomfortable dismissal. Nevertheless, Barrymore clarified the situation during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.

Barrymore clears the air on ‘touchy’ Martha Stewart interview

Barrymore expressed her thoughts on the incident, stating, "I believe she was merely teasing," when questioned about the event. Cohen concurred with her perspective. Barrymore elaborated that, despite her earlier uncertainties, she now feels that Stewart genuinely has affection for her. "I think the internet misinterpreted the moment and took it too far. Initially, I thought, ‘She may not like me,’ but I believe I have made a connection. She certainly does not harbor any dislike for me!"

The moment gained significant attention when, during their discussion about what makes Stewart feel "soft and gooey," Barrymore affectionately touched Stewart’s arm and back, which led the 83-year-old lifestyle icon to gently push her away, stating, "You're the wrong gender."

In a lighthearted manner, Barrymore reclined on the couch and remarked, "I know … although, considering how things are going with men, Martha, I’m not entirely certain anymore."

In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight regarding the renewal of her show for a sixth season, she acknowledged her efforts to "practice physical distance," while humorously noting that it remains a work in progress.

When Cohen inquired about her progress towards achieving her physical-distance objective, Barrymore responded with laughter, stating, "Not good! I can’t control it." She mentioned that focus groups had previously criticized her tactile demeanor when The Drew Barrymore Show initially premiered, yet she remains unapologetic.

“I’m so touchy!” Barrymore expressed in a prior episode of her show. “People have to give me a heads-up. They say, ‘Back off a little bit.’ I respond, ‘Why?’”
