Director Devashish Makhija began his career by assisting Anurag Kashyap on Black Friday and Shaad Ali on Bunty Aur Babli. He initially pursued a project with Yash Raj Films, working on an animated film that was ultimately abandoned three years into its production. Makhija recently shared his experiences regarding this setback in an interview.

In his discussion with Screen, Makhija reflected on his early journey into directing. "It has been quite a perplexing path. At 45, I am now making my fifth film. Had I been able to choose between two clear paths, I would likely be working on my 11th or 12th film by now. After Bunty Aur Babli, I was engaged in creating an animated feature for Yash Raj Films and Disney. However, following the poor performance of their first animated film, Roadside Romeo, my project was abruptly canceled after three years of work. I was set to travel to Pixar for the final production stages, which meant I lost three years of my life."

Makhija also discussed the impact of his decision to pursue mainstream films, stating, "I’m not sure if it was by chance or fate, but I found myself on the Yash Raj path. However, when my film was shelved, I had to walk away from a three-film contract with them. No one informed me that a project could be canceled after three years of development, which effectively erased that time from my life."

Devashish Makhija's career

Devashish Makhija eventually made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Oria film Oonga in 2013. He has since directed Bhonsle and Joram, both featuring Manoj Bajpayee. While these films received critical praise and accolades, they did not achieve significant box office success. His upcoming project is Gandhari, starring Taapsee Pannu.
