‘Gandi Filmein Hi Banti Hain, Including My Own’: Salman Khan’s Blunt Take on Bollywood Flops
3 days ago | 5 Views
Rely on Salman Khan to be entirely forthright with the media, often sharing insights that even experienced journalists find surprising. In a time when film reporters have grown used to well-rehearsed and refined answers from celebrities, Salman remains a refreshing reminder of the past, characterized by genuine and spontaneous remarks. During a media event on Wednesday to promote his forthcoming film, Sikandar, the actor stayed true to his nature and revealed some unexpected truths.
Salman Khan on his films failing at the box office
When the actor was invited to share his thoughts on Bollywood's current 'dull phase' at the box office, he remarked, "When poor-quality films are produced, they are bound to fail. All the films being made are subpar, including my own. If a film does not succeed, it is considered bad; if it does succeed, it is regarded as very good." In 2023, Salman experienced his first significant flop in years with the film Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, which did not manage to recoup its investment.
Salman Khan also accepted responsibility for the film's lack of success, stating that the star must attract audiences to the theater. "The star is the one featured on the poster and present in the theater. If the films do not perform well, the blame falls on him as well," he explained.
Salman reveals what ails Bollywood
The actor expressed his concerns regarding the current state of writing in the film industry, particularly in Hindi cinema, and the decline in quality productions. He stated, "Writers are currently focused on their interests, competing with directors, while producers are in a rivalry with one another. Everyone seems intent on demonstrating their filmmaking skills to others. However, the primary goal should be to create films for the audience. The writing must engage viewers as if they are seated in the front row, enjoying the experience. One should not assume that the audience won't understand; such thinking leads to spoonfeeding them. The audience has evolved significantly, especially with the rise of OTT platforms, which provide access to a diverse range of films from around the world."
The 59-year-old actor called on filmmakers to create movies for the right reasons, a practice he believes is lacking today. "Our directors and producers are often motivated by the wrong factors," he remarked. "As my father pointed out recently, films are frequently made based on the availability of actors, wedding schedules, or funding. A film should only be produced when there is an exceptional script in hand. Nothing else should take precedence."
Nevertheless, the actor concluded the conversation on an optimistic note. "Regardless of their quality, films remain the most popular form of entertainment in the country," he noted. "While some may choose to visit nightclubs, the majority prefer to stay home and watch movies." He expressed hope that Hindi cinema would experience a positive shift shortly.
