In conversations regarding debut director Sumanth Bhat’s film Mithya, which is set to premiere in theaters on March 7 following a successful run at film festivals, the focus often shifts to the performances of the two young actors portraying Mithya and Vandana. However, attention soon turns to Prakash Thuminad, who plays their uncle, Surya. Sumanth remarked during a recent interaction on X Space aimed at promoting the film, “Together, they have established a highly convincing family dynamic. Prakash sir is primarily known for his comedic roles and has seldom taken on such characters, leading to audience surprise at his versatility in Mithya.”

Sumanth Bhat: We don't give actors space to thrive and surprise us

The unfortunate reality of the Kannada film industry, as noted by Sumanth, is the tendency to typecast actors. “When an actor's comedic talent is recognized, they are often confined to similar roles, or if they excel in portraying a police officer, they are relegated to that character type. This is a significant loss; we fail to provide actors with the opportunity to grow and astonish us. Prakash sir is an extraordinary talent. In the film Mithya, there is a pivotal moment in an autorickshaw where he delivers a single line, and it instantly clarifies the entire backstory of his character. This scene is vital, and executing it successfully is a remarkable feat,” remarked the filmmaker.

At the conclusion of the scene, Sumanth embraced Prakash, as it was during this moment that he effectively conveyed his character's motivations and background to the audience. “For an actor to achieve that with merely one line highlights his exceptional abilities,” he stated. Sumanth emphasized that it is the responsibility of filmmakers to push actors like Prakash, who are always eager to explore and embrace new challenges.

The narrative of the film centers on an 11-year-old boy grappling with the unexpected loss of both his parents, drawing inspiration from a real-life event that Sumanth subsequently enriched with personal touches. "Globally, many debut films by filmmakers often reflect on their childhood, maturation, or adolescence, as these periods are filled with significant emotional drama in everyone's life. One tends to draw from personal experiences. I had a wonderful childhood and did not experience the loss of my parents at a young age. Therefore, while Mithya incorporates many personal elements, it is not a direct reflection of my life. Nonetheless, it does not transform into a purely fictional narrative," the filmmaker articulates.
