Sukumar talks about Pushpa's negative influence on society

The debate grew more heated following Allu Arjun's receipt of the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Pushpa. This recognition ignited extensive discourse regarding the government's decision to honour an actor who depicts a character associated with sandalwood smuggling. Upon the release of Pushpa 2, these criticisms intensified, with comments emerging from various quarters of the Telugu film industry. Certain critics contend that contemporary heroes are taking on roles that have a detrimental impact on society.

Sukumar, the director of the film, has addressed these criticisms for the first time. He emphasized that his films are designed solely for entertainment purposes and are not meant to incite or endorse criminal activities. "Labeling my film as anti-national or suggesting that it incites youth is the most distressing accusation I could face. My goal is to entertain audiences, and if my three-hour film captivates viewers in theaters, it could potentially lead to a decrease in crime rates," Sukumar remarked.

In the film Pushpa, Allu Arjun portrays a sandalwood smuggler who ascends from poverty to wealth, generating significant excitement among viewers. Sukumar has a reputation for developing films with distinctive narratives, frequently showcasing protagonists who possess morally ambiguous characteristics. This method has struck a chord with the general public, although it has faced backlash from critics who argue that such representations may inspire young people to emulate undesirable conduct.

Sukumar has firmly rejected these accusations, reiterating that his films are meant for entertainment and should not be taken too seriously.
