Ajay Devgn entered the Bollywood industry with his debut in Kuku Kohli's film Phool Aur Kaante in 1991. In this movie, he portrayed a leading role and received acclaim for his performance. Interestingly, Ajay was not the original choice for the film; the director, recognized for introducing new talent, had initially intended to cast Akshay Kumar. Ultimately, however, Ajay was selected to take on the role in this 1991 production.

Akshay Kumar was the first choice for Phool Aur Kaante

In a recent interview, Kuku Kohli disclosed that Akshay Kumar was initially considered for the lead role in Phool Aur Kaante.

Initially, I conducted a screen test with Akshay Kumar for the same project, and he was cast in the film. I also filmed a song as a test featuring three to four actresses, including Sonali Bendre, which turned out quite well. However, around that time, Akshay Kumar and Karishma Kapoor were signed for another project under Pramod Chakravorty’s production, and for some unknown reason, that film did not proceed to production, Kohli recounted.

The filmmaker further elaborated that he was in search of a newcomer when it came time to direct the 1991 film. "I was in urgent need of a newcomer, as I was also receiving my own opportunity. That is how everything began. I had come across Ajay’s photograph in Veeruji’s office," he noted.

How Ajay Devgn landed a role in Phool Aur Kaante

During the same discussion, Kuku Kohli disclosed the circumstances under which Ajay was ultimately presented with the opportunity to assume the lead role. "I filmed two takes and encouraged him to perform with spontaneity. It required approximately an hour and a half, but I noticed a profound depth in his eyes, a distinct expression, and considerable potential. This marked the beginning of his journey," he stated.

In terms of upcoming projects, Ajay is set to appear in Azaad, while Akshay is preparing for the theatrical release of Sky Force.
