In an era where genre-specific films are gaining significant popularity and audience engagement, composer-actor-producer GV Prakash has announced the upcoming release of India’s inaugural sea-fantasy adventure film, Kingston. Scheduled to premiere in theatres on March 7, the film boasts impressive visuals that evoke a sense of wonder, reminiscent of a homegrown version of Pirates of the Caribbean. The film's director, debutant Kamal Prakash, remarks:

“We understand that comparisons to Pirates of the Caribbean are inevitable, as it represents the pinnacle of sea adventure films. However, Kingston is not intended to be a direct comparison to any film within that franchise. Our goal is to deliver an experience that captures at least 50% of what they achieved. Kingston is deeply rooted in its narrative, and while we anticipate these comparisons, we are prepared to address them.”

Was the idea to make the first sea-fantasy film come first, or idea of the story come ahead?

We aimed to create a captivating film, and at a certain stage, I decided to select a genre for this project. I do not have a strong affinity for horror. Many horror films released over the past decade have adhered to a formulaic approach, which has diminished my enthusiasm for the genre. However, it is important to note that Kingston does not fit the mould of a traditional horror film. I intend to infuse the genre with fresh elements, as there are always films that emerge periodically to revitalize it, such as 13B, Maya, and Don’t Breathe. I believe the genre remains viable, but it must avoid becoming formulaic. This perspective influenced our decision to change the setting to a maritime environment. Our goal was never to claim the title of India’s first in this genre but rather to introduce a novel concept within it.

What is Kingston all about?

After deciding to set the film in a maritime environment, we conceived the notion of exploring the terrifying aspects of the sea at night, particularly when fishermen embark on their journeys. We conducted research and development, which led us to begin crafting a narrative. I am convinced that embracing local elements is the only path to achieving global resonance. Consequently, I delved into authentic stories and the enigmas that reside within that setting. While horror serves as a component of the narrative, it is not the sole focus.

Can you talk a little more on the premise of Kingston?

The film is set in a fishing village, from which we have drawn extensively on the traditions and culture of the local fisherfolk. We have extracted key elements to incorporate into the narrative. The trailer provides only a brief overview of what to expect. There is no doubt that "Kingston" will be a film that offers a unique experience. This will serve as our hallmark, yet the story is rich with various elements. It features numerous characters, multiple timelines, and intricate layers. It will not be comparable to any other film.

Is the story fictional?

It is not entirely fictional. We have integrated realistic aspects into the film, reflecting the traditions and customs practised within the community. We have added our interpretation to these elements. Therefore, it is not wholly fictional. The local aspects we have included are intriguing and have been preserved for the film. By "local," we refer to the incorporation of elements from our own culture, presented freshly.

At what point did GV Prakash become involved in the project?

Our journey has been extensive, dating back to my time as a short film director. We have maintained contact since 2018, and each time I draft a script, we engage in discussions. It took me some time to finalize the story of "Kingston," and once I completed it, he was the first person I approached. This is a highly ambitious project, and it took about 2-3 years to navigate the challenges of setting it up. Eventually, after ZEE Studios joined the project, they provided valuable support regarding the budget and presentation.

What advice would you offer to debut directors aiming to undertake large-scale projects?

I believe the situation is improving. The most critical factor is that the concept must be exceptionally robust. If the project involves a significant budget, it is essential to instil confidence in stakeholders that we can successfully execute it. One effective approach is to conduct pilot shoots. For this particular film, we organized a small shoot to provide a tangible demonstration of our vision. This allowed the producers to gauge our capability to deliver on the project. In the case of Kingston, we collaborated with GV Prakash for a shoot, ensuring that the footage was utilized in the final film. For emerging filmmakers, it is vital that their ideas are engaging and that they are well-prepared for implementation. Staying informed about budgeting, logistical considerations, and execution strategies is crucial.

Do you have any final thoughts regarding your debut feature?

Audiences can expect a rich experience. Kingston not only offers a compelling narrative but also promises a strong theatrical experience that viewers will connect with. The support from GV sir and the production team has been invaluable, and the technical departments have delivered outputs that far exceed those of other films. On a personal note, I would like to express my gratitude to my family, particularly my wife Divya Kamal, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey over the past five to six years to bring my first feature to fruition.

GV Prakash-starrer Kingston is gearing up for release in cinemas on March 7.
