A new documentary about F.R.I.E.N.D.S. star Matthew Perry is set to explore his life and tragic passing. Titled “Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy,” the film is directed and executive-produced by Robert Palumbo and will premiere on Peacock on Tuesday, February 25.
In an interview with The NY Post, Palumbo mentioned that it’s not too soon for a documentary like this, noting that “the impact of his death is fresh.”
Perry tragically passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54 in his Pacific Palisades home. His autopsy report revealed that he drowned accidentally and died from the “acute effects of ketamine.”
Matthew Perry's documentary director talks about why the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. stars aren't featured
Interviews with Perry's F.R.I.E.N.D.S. co-stars—David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc—aren't part of the documentary.
Palumbo explained their absence, saying it makes sense they were hesitant to participate in a documentary about Matthew right now. “It’s understandable that they didn’t want to be involved at this time. Maybe in the future… We respect their choice not to take part,” he shared with The Post.
The documentary takes a deep dive into Perry's battles with substance abuse and addiction. It includes an interview with Morgan Fairchild, who portrayed Chandler's mom on F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
Fairchild echoed Palumbo's point that Perry wanted his legacy to focus on helping others facing addiction.
“I believe he’ll be remembered for his efforts to support others. And Morgan thought that was the key message to get across,” Palumbo added.
Palumbo was taken aback by various aspects of the investigation into Matthew's death
The documentary also covers the five arrests linked to Perry's death investigation. Among those arrested are Jasveen Sangha, dubbed the “Ketamine Queen,” and Dr. Salvador Plasencia, both of whom are still waiting for their trial. US District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett has set their joint trial for March 4, 2025, after they pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Palumbo was taken aback by many elements of the case, calling it a glimpse into the “underbelly of Hollywood.”
